Mallorcan athlete Joan Pere Carbonell is about to embark on a truly mind-boggling adventure: the World Marathon Challenge. Think seven marathons, across seven continents, in just seven days. Yeah, you read that right. This isn't just about personal glory; it's a mission to raise crucial funds for ichthyosis research, a rare skin disease that affects his daughter. Talk about running with a purpose.
Mallorca Runner's Insane Challenge: Will He Conque...
Carbonell, a local businessman and member of Club ADA Atletismo Calvià, is the only Spaniard brave (or perhaps slightly crazy!) enough to take on this year's challenge. He'll be kicking things off on January 28th, jetting off to the icy plains of Antarctica for the first marathon on January 31st. Honestly, just thinking about that first run makes me shiver!
The World Marathon Challenge is an incredibly exclusive event. This year, only 60 runners worldwide were hand-picked after a demanding application process. It's a real testament to Carbonell's dedication and athletic prowess that he's made the cut. As someone who struggles to run for the bus some days, I'm in awe.
The challenge gained official momentum with a launch event at Calvià Town Hall. Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual pledged the town's full support, offering their communication channels to amplify awareness. "This challenge, combined with a charitable cause, has all the ingredients to deserve our full support,” Amengual stated. It's great to see the community rallying behind Carbonell's inspiring effort.
So, where exactly will Carbonell be pounding the pavement (or ice, in the case of Antarctica)? After the initial Antarctic marathon, he'll be racing through Cape Town, South Africa; Perth, Australia; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Madrid, Spain; Fortaleza, Brazil; and finally, Miami, United States. The sheer logistics alone are enough to give you a headache, let alone the physical demands!
The World Marathon Challenge is notorious for being one of the toughest endurance events on the planet. Forget your local fun run – this is a brutal combination of extreme climates, crippling jet lag, and relentless physical exertion, all crammed into a single week. It’s a true test of human limits.
Importantly, Joan Pere Carbonell is personally covering all his expenses for the challenge, meaning that every single penny raised will go directly to ichthyosis research. If you're looking to contribute, you can donate via Bizum or bank transfer through the non-profit association’s website at ictiosis.org/dona. Let’s help him make a real difference!
Last year, influencer Verdeliss dominated the 2025 challenge, even winning five of the seven marathons. It'll be interesting to see if Carbonell can channel that same winning energy. Whatever the outcome, his commitment to raising awareness and funds for ichthyosis research is truly commendable. Best of luck, Joan Pere!
