Trump SHOCKS NATO! Tariffs Imposed After Greenland Dispute?!
Current Affairs 18 January 2026

Donald Trump has thrown a major wrench into transatlantic relations, announcing a hefty 10% tariff on goods from several NATO allies who have deployed troops to Greenland. The tariff, slated to kick in on February 1st, is aimed squarely at Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.

Trump SHOCKS NATO! Tariffs Imposed After Greenland...

And it doesn't stop there. According to Trump, this initial tariff will more than double to 25% by June 1st, all, according to him, until the U.S. manages to purchase Greenland. For those unfamiliar, Greenland is a self-governing territory, but it falls under the Kingdom of Denmark. This whole situation feels like something ripped straight from a political satire, but alas, here we are.

"This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet," Trump blasted on social media. "These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable." What exactly that "dangerous game" is, remains somewhat ambiguous. However, Trump has been consistent with his bizarre claims regarding China and Russia's potential interest in Greenland, suggesting Denmark is incapable of protecting the territory. “Only the United States of America, under PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP, can play in this game, and very successfully, at that!" he proclaimed. The exclamation point felt necessary there, trust me.

Unsurprisingly, leaders from the targeted nations are less than thrilled. French President Emmanuel Macron was characteristically blunt: "France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of Nations. No intimidation nor threat will influence us, neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world when we are confronted with such situations." He didn't mince words, adding, "Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond to them in a united and coordinated manner if they were to be confirmed. We will know how to uphold European sovereignty."

Across the channel, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed the sentiment, calling the tariffs "completely wrong." "Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of NATO allies is completely wrong," Starmer said. "Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes."

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson revealed that discussions are underway between the affected countries to formulate a coordinated response. "We will not let ourselves be blackmailed. Only Denmark and Greenland decide on issues concerning Denmark and Greenland," he asserted. "I will always stand up for my country, and for our allied neighbors." It's worth remembering that Trump has previously floated the idea of *taking* Greenland by force, which, needless to say, hasn't gone down well with anyone. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, after a recent meeting with VP Vance and Secretary Rubio, condemned Trump’s desire to "conquer over Greenland" as "totally unacceptable." Rasmussen reiterated that Greenland is simply not for sale.
