Trump's Greenland Tariff BOMBSHELL! EU Retaliation Imminent?!
Current Affairs 20 January 2026

Well, things are heating up, folks. It looks like the prospect of a Trade war between the U.S. and Europe is becoming increasingly real, all thanks to, of all things, Greenland. President Trump, never one to back down from a fight, has doubled down on his earlier pronouncements, stating he will "100%" implement tariffs against Greenland, and by extension, a whole host of European nations, if a deal isn't reached for the U.S. to purchase the territory from Denmark.

Trump's Greenland Tariff BOMBSHELL! EU Retaliation...

The EU, unsurprisingly, isn't taking this lying down. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, made it clear that while they don't want a fight, they're prepared to stand their ground. This isn't just about Greenland, of course; it's about sovereignty, and the EU is clearly drawing a line in the sand. Let's be honest, the notion of using tariffs as a bargaining chip to purchase a territory is...well, it's certainly a novel approach to international diplomacy.

The potential tariffs are pretty steep, with a proposed 10% levy on goods starting February 1st, jumping to a hefty 25% by June 1st. These tariffs would impact goods from the UK and seven other NATO allies: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland. The impact on global trade could be significant, to say the least. What’s even more concerning, Denmark itself has warned that any US military action in Greenland would essentially dismantle NATO. That's a pretty serious statement, and one that should give everyone pause.

Trump, meanwhile, seems to think Europe should be focusing on the conflict in Ukraine. He stated that Europe "ought to focus on the war with Russia and Ukraine because, frankly, you see what that's gotten them... That's what Europe should focus on - not Greenland." While he's not wrong about the importance of Ukraine, linking it to the Greenland issue seems a bit of a stretch, almost like deflecting from the core issue. It's a classic Trump move, though, isn't it?

Adding a bizarre twist to the whole saga is the revelation of leaked text exchanges where Trump apparently blamed Norway for his lack of a Nobel Peace Prize. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre politely pointed out that the Nobel Committee is independent and not controlled by the government. Trump, however, seems unconvinced. "Norway totally controls it [the Nobel Prize] despite what they say," he insisted. Honestly, the whole thing has a surreal, almost comical quality, if it weren’t for the very real potential for economic and political fallout. The EU is holding an emergency summit to discuss a unified response. It's going to be a tense few weeks, that's for sure. I, for one, will be watching closely.
