It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since former President Trump re-entered the political arena, and the anniversary was… well, vintage Trump. Instead of a victory lap, it felt more like a therapy session – for him, not us.
Trump's Anniversary: The Grievance That SHOCKED Ev...
On Tuesday, marking the first anniversary of his return, Trump held a press conference that, to put it mildly, was heavy on grievances and light on celebration. He even brought a folder, proclaiming it contained a list of 365 accomplishments from the past year. And, in a statement that will likely be endlessly quoted, he declared, "God is very proud of the work I have done." Okay, then.
Before even entertaining questions from reporters, Trump launched into a lengthy monologue, clocking in at over an hour. The central theme? He wasn't getting enough credit, of course! He took jabs at opponents, unleashed a few choice swear words, and, unsurprisingly, doubled down on conspiracy theories, most notably his thoroughly debunked claims of a stolen 2020 election. "Maybe I have bad public relations people, but we’re not getting it," he lamented, also pointing a finger at "fake news." You know, the usual.
Later that day, he was headed to Davos, Switzerland, to hobnob with global leaders at the World Economic Forum. He indicated that his speech on Wednesday would defend his rather aggressive interest in Greenland, that big, icy island that's part of Denmark, a U.S. ally. "We need it for national security," he asserted. "Things are going to work out pretty well." But when pressed on just how far he'd go to acquire the island, he simply stated, "You'll find out." Cryptic, to say the least.
The address itself was delivered in a surprisingly subdued tone, starting with praise for his administration's crackdown on illegal immigration using military-style agents. He even showed mugshots of criminals apprehended in Minnesota, where, it's worth remembering, a protester was recently killed by one of those agents. He then proceeded to reiterate numerous claims that have been repeatedly disputed or outright debunked. Think: the "rigged" 2020 election, prescription drug prices supposedly plummeting by 600% (a mathematical impossibility, folks), and the claim that the U.S. had attracted a staggering $18 trillion in inward investment. It was a greatest hits of questionable assertions.
Then there was the bizarre tangent about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, whom he reportedly wants to involve in some unspecified way. "We're talking to her," Trump said. He also praised Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who launched an offensive against the U.S.'s former Kurdish allies, calling him "working very, very hard" and suggesting a "choir boy" couldn't handle the complexities of the Syrian situation. The whole thing was… well, it was something.
Unsurprisingly, the reaction from Democrats was swift and harsh. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer responded scathingly, saying, "He only grows more crazy and more unpopular." It's safe to say the anniversary wasn't exactly a unifying moment for the country. More like a reminder of the divides that continue to define our political landscape.
