Vietnam Coach's Shocking Face-Off Against Korea! What Happens Next?!
Current Affairs 21 January 2026

Vietnam is heading for a showdown dripping with narrative. They're set to face South Korea in the third-place playoff at the AFC U-23 Asian Cup this Friday, a match that carries extra weight considering the man on the Vietnamese sideline: their coach, Kim Sang-sik, a native son of Korea.

The road to this consolation match wasn't pretty for either side. Vietnam, under Kim's tutelage, suffered a humbling 3-0 defeat to China in the semifinals. Goals from Peng Xiao, Xiang Yuwang, and Wang Yudong sealed Vietnam's fate in that contest, played at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. It's a tough pill to swallow after what looked like a dominant run up until that point.

Korea, meanwhile, experienced their own semifinal heartache. They were narrowly edged out by Japan, losing 1-0 in a tense affair. That loss, no doubt, stung, as it dashed their hopes of lifting the trophy for the first time since 2020. Now, both teams are left to battle for bronze, a less than ideal outcome, but a chance nonetheless to salvage something from the tournament.

The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in Jeddah – midnight Friday back in Korea. That makes it a late night for Korean football fans, but I'm sure many will be tuning in to see how their nation performs, and of course, to see Kim Sang-sik leading the opposition. It's a fascinating dynamic, to say the least.

Prior to the semifinal stumble, Vietnam's campaign had been impressive. They topped Group A with a perfect record, securing victories against Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, and even the host nation, Saudi Arabia. They scored five goals and conceded just one in the group stage, showcasing a solid defense and a clinical attack. Then they scraped through against the United Arab Emirates with a 3-2 victory in extra time in the quarterfinals. It seemed like they had the momentum, but China proved to be a hurdle too high.

Kim Sang-sik's tenure with Vietnam has been relatively short, having taken the reins in May 2024. He's already tasted success, including a senior ASEAN Championship title last January, plus ASEAN U-23 and Southeast Asian Games titles. He is clearly making an impact. Can he now guide them to a victory against his own nation? That's the big question.

Vietnam's best showing at the AFC U-23 Championship came in 2018 when they reached the final, only to be defeated by Uzbekistan. Korea, coached by Lee Min-sung, are hungry for their first title in four years. Both teams have plenty to play for, making this third-place playoff far more than just a consolation match. Expect fireworks in Jeddah.
