FC Seoul just made a splash, folks. The capital club announced Wednesday the acquisition of attacking midfielder Song Min-kyu, and this isn't just another signing – it's a reunion. Song will be linking back up with head coach Kim Gi-dong, the very man who gave him his first real shot in the K League 1.
FC Seoul SHOCK Signing! What Does This Mean for th...
Song, now 26, comes to Seoul after a solid five-season stint with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. He was a key cog in Jeonbuk’s impressive 2025 domestic double, where they snagged both the K League 1 title *and* the Korea Cup. He chipped in with five goals and two assists in 35 appearances, performances that earned him a well-deserved spot on the K League 1 Best XI at the end of the season. Seems like a good pick-up, right?
The South Korean international's career actually kicked off with Pohang Steelers back in 2018. And guess who was there? Yep, Kim Gi-dong, serving as the top assistant coach. Kim's promotion to head coach in 2019 was the catalyst for Song to really take off. He flourished under Kim’s guidance, eventually snagging the K League 1 Young Player of the Year award in 2020. That season saw him bag 10 goals and dish out six assists in just 27 matches. Clearly, there’s some chemistry there.
Beyond the club level, Song's also made his mark on the international stage, earning 14 caps for South Korea. He even made the cut for the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, although, unfortunately, he didn’t get to showcase his skills on the pitch in Qatar. He did, however, snag a gold medal with South Korea at the 2023 Asian Games, so he knows what it takes to win.
Known for his blistering pace, tricky dribbling, and overall versatility in attack, Song is expected to inject some serious firepower into FC Seoul's offensive lineup. "I am really looking forward to playing for coach Kim Gi-dong again," Song said in a statement. "When he reached out, I told him I wanted to be with him again. I will try to put up even better numbers than in the past and make FC Seoul fans happy." It sounds like he's genuinely motivated, which is always a good sign.
FC Seoul isn't messing around. They're clearly aiming to improve on their sixth-place finish in 2025 and have been seriously active in the transfer market. Besides Song, they’ve also brought in Colombian forward Leonardo Ruiz, who was a scoring machine in K League 2 last year (17 goals for Seongnam FC), and Croatian midfielder Hrvoje Babec, a former highly-regarded prospect who cut his teeth in the French league. It’s a bold strategy, let's see if it pays off.
