Tom Izzo, the legendary Michigan State basketball coach, never shies away from speaking his mind. And after the Spartans cruised to a 68-52 victory over Oregon Tuesday night, one player, sophomore guard Kur Teng, found himself squarely in the crosshairs of Izzo's famously blunt assessment.
Izzo's SHOCKING Claim: Teng "Can't Guard My Mother...
The quote, as it circulated online, was… well, classic Izzo. According to reports, the coach told Teng point-blank that he "can't guard" Izzo's mother, whom he noted is a remarkable 99.5 years old. I mean, you gotta love the specificity. Izzo wasn't just making a general comment, he was really driving the point home about Teng's defensive shortcomings.
Apparently, Izzo wasn't kidding around either. He insisted he was "as serious as a jaybird" during the exchange with Teng, then doubled down on his critique during the postgame press conference. Imagine being in that room! You could practically feel the tension. He even preemptively addressed any potential questions about his mother’s… let’s say, lack of basketball experience. "She doesn't have game," Izzo conceded, "and Teng still couldn't guard her." Ouch. Double ouch.
Look, Izzo's known for being hard on his players, but usually there's a method to the madness. He's trying to light a fire, push them to be better. And you can't argue with the results. The Spartans are currently sitting pretty at 17-2 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play, good for third in the conference. Teng himself is averaging a respectable 7.3 points in about 16 minutes of playing time. Not earth-shattering, but certainly contributing.
Whether this particular brand of tough love will translate into improved defense from Teng remains to be seen. The Spartans are set to face the Maryland Terrapins at home on Saturday, and all eyes will be on Teng to see if Izzo's… motivational tactic… has paid off. It's a pressure cooker situation for the young guard, no doubt. But hey, if he can start locking down opponents, maybe, just maybe, he'll finally be able to guard someone even Coach Izzo's mother could post up against. And that, my friends, would be a story worth writing.
