Ubisoft SHOCK: Prince of Persia REMAKE Canceled?! Studio CLOSURES!
Gaming News 21 January 2026

The winds of change are howling through Ubisoft headquarters, and the iconic "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" remake has become the latest casualty. In a sweeping move, the gaming giant is not only pulling the plug on the much-delayed remake, but also shuttering studios and axing multiple projects as part of a dramatic "reset." It's a stark reminder that even established titans in the industry are facing increasingly tough times.

Ubisoft SHOCK: Prince of Persia REMAKE Canceled?! ...

Ubisoft's restructuring plan is ambitious, dividing its creative power into five distinct "houses," each focused on specific genres and franchises. Think of it as a major reshuffling of the deck, aiming to concentrate resources on their biggest hitters like "Assassin's Creed" and "Far Cry," while also exploring new opportunities in competitive shooters and live service games. The focus, according to Ubisoft, is on a "more discerning AAA market" and a cutthroat shooter landscape. But is it enough?

The human cost of this "reset" is significant. The closure of Ubisoft Halifax and Stockholm studios is a blow to the developers who poured their talent and passion into their work. While the exact number of employees affected hasn't been revealed, the ripple effects will undoubtedly be felt throughout the industry. Adding to the pressure, remaining staff are reportedly being called back to the office five days a week, a move that feels particularly tone-deaf given the current climate and the industry's increasing acceptance of remote work options.

Beyond the studio closures, the cancellation of six unreleased games is a clear sign of the company tightening its belt. While four of these were unannounced, it's the "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" remake that's drawing the most attention. Announced in 2020, the remake was plagued by delays and development challenges. The last we heard, it was tentatively slated for a release between January and March 2026. To see it vanish entirely is a shock, especially for fans eagerly awaiting a return to the beloved classic.

The impact of these changes is already being felt in Ubisoft's financial projections. The company has lowered its full-year net bookings estimate by a substantial €330 million, a clear indicator of the scale of the restructuring. To soften the blow, seven unnamed games are also being pushed back to ensure "enhanced quality benchmarks," including, reportedly, a remake of "Assassin's Creed Black Flag," now expected after April 2026. Are these just more delays though, or are they setting themselves up to quietly cancel even more games?

"These measures mark a decisive turning point for Ubisoft," CEO Yves Guillemot declared. While his words are undoubtedly meant to inspire confidence, only time will tell if this drastic shake-up will truly reshape the company for the long term, or if it's merely a temporary fix in an increasingly competitive and unpredictable gaming world. One thing is for sure: the gaming landscape is constantly evolving, and even the giants need to adapt to survive.
