The whispers have been swirling for years, haven’t they? The longing for a proper, affordable, mid-engine sports car from Toyota. Well, folks, it seems our dreams are finally coming true. Toyota has officially confirmed they are, indeed, developing a new mid-engine model. And not just any mid-engine car; a spiritual successor to the iconic MR2!
Toyota CONFIRMS Mid-Engine Marvel! What Happens Ne...
For those of us who remember the original MR2 (I certainly do, my neighbor had a bright red one back in the day!), this is huge news. That little car, first released way back in 1984, was a revelation. It proved that mid-engine performance didn't have to be the sole domain of ridiculously expensive Italian exotics. It was fun, accessible, and genuinely cool. It sadly disappeared after three generations, leaving a mid-engine-shaped hole in the hearts of enthusiasts.
Now, thanks to the team at Gazoo Racing (GR), that hole is about to be filled. GR, increasingly becoming Toyota's performance arm, is leading the charge on this exciting project. Think of them as the AMG to Mercedes-Benz, but with a distinctly Japanese flair.
However, don't expect to see this beauty rolling off production lines tomorrow. Tomoya Takahashi, the new head honcho at GR, has stated that we're still a few years away from the final product. He did, however, drop a crucial hint: G20E. Remember that code. It's the key to what makes this new car tick. Specifically, it refers to the powerplant.
That powerplant, according to Takahashi, is a brand-new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, aiming for a whopping 400 horsepower… and potentially even more in higher-performance iterations, possibly reaching the 600 hp mark! This isn't just some warmed-over engine either. This little beast is reportedly smaller, lower in profile, and significantly more powerful than the existing 2.4-liter turbo unit currently found in some Toyotas. Apparently, this engine had a test run in a Yaris M prototype. Imagine that! A Yaris with supercar-levels of power.
But it gets better. Toyota is also promising a 30 percent improvement in efficiency, strongly hinting at some form of hybrid assistance. And here's another interesting tidbit: this 2.0-liter engine is designed to be compatible with electric assistance and suitable for use in front-engine vehicles too. This suggests that Toyota is planning a versatile engine family, potentially powering a range of future models. So, while we eagerly await the rebirth of the MR2, we can also look forward to seeing this exciting new engine in other Toyota vehicles in the coming years. The future, it seems, is looking bright, turbocharged, and mid-engined!
