Ron Perlman, bless his heart, isn't letting age slow him down. The actor, now 75, has once again declared his unwavering dedication to completing the *Hellboy* trilogy with director Guillermo del Toro. And let's be honest, a lot of us die-hard fans are right there with him. We've waited long enough!
Ron Perlman, 75, Hellboy Return?! You Won't BELIEV...
Perlman's enthusiasm is, frankly, infectious. In a recent interview with GQ, timed to coincide with his cameo in Amazon's *Fallout* series, he didn't mince words about his desire to don the red makeup and oversized hand one more time. It's almost like he knows what the fans want.
"F**k yeah," he proclaimed, characteristically blunt. "I mean, I was asked to do the one with David Harbour. But the only Hellboy I’m interested in doing is Hellboy 3 — finishing the trilogy we started with del Toro and the original crew. It can’t be jobbed out." He even joked, "You know, call me in five years if we haven’t made Hellboy 3 yet and ask me if I’m ready at 80. And I’ll go, ‘Yeah, alright. As long as I’m covered in rubber, no one will know I’m pissing my pants.’” That's commitment right there, folks!
The "one with David Harbour" he's referring to, of course, is the 2019 reboot. Harbour, a fantastic actor in his own right, stepped into the role, but without del Toro's vision, the film just didn't connect with audiences. It was a swing and a miss, both critically and commercially. And then there was *Hellboy: The Crooked Man*, which kinda just...happened and then disappeared. Neither film captured the magic of the original two.
Perlman's point is clear: it's about more than just playing the character. It's about honoring the story del Toro envisioned. "I thought we owed it to the fans," he said, emphasizing the incomplete arc left hanging after *Hellboy II: The Golden Army*. “I still do. I'll do it now at 75-years-old, if the right person came along and says, ‘Okay.’" He understands the desire for closure, for that final chapter where Hellboy confronts his destiny, twins and all.
He's right. The ending of *Golden Army* practically screamed for a sequel. We were left dangling, wanting to see Hellboy grapple with his role in the apocalypse and the implications of his impending fatherhood. It felt like a betrayal to not deliver that resolution. "The third movie was going to have all that in it. It was going to be the resolve," Perlman explained. "And I thought that if you invited the fans to participate in one and two and not give them three, you were performing some sort of a… what is it called in legal circles? It should have happened.”
Whether *Hellboy 3* will ever actually materialize remains to be seen. Hollywood is a fickle beast. But Perlman's unwavering passion keeps the hope alive, and frankly, reminds us why we loved those first two movies so much in the first place. As he rightly pointed out, even with all the superhero flicks out there, *Hellboy* still holds its own. Here's hoping someone, somewhere, listens to the fans (and Ron) and gives us the Hellboy conclusion we deserve.
