Ukraine Peace Deal: One HUGE Obstacle Remains! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 22 January 2026

Hopeful signs are emerging from the ongoing efforts to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Moscow this week, armed with what he hopes will be the key to unlocking a final agreement. The situation remains delicate, of course, but the fact that negotiations have reportedly narrowed down to a single sticking point is certainly cause for cautious optimism.

Ukraine Peace Deal: One HUGE Obstacle Remains! Wha...

Witkoff, speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, sounded genuinely encouraged. He suggested that if both sides are genuinely committed to finding a resolution, that final hurdle can be overcome. "I think we’ve got it down to one issue, and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it’s solvable,” he said. While remaining understandably guarded about the specifics, Witkoff has previously hinted that the sticking point revolves around territory. That's the big one, isn't it always?

The core of the dispute, as many know, centers on Russia's insistence that Ukraine relinquish its claims to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, along with the Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions – territories annexed by Russia in 2022 following referendums widely considered illegitimate by the international community. Ukrainian President Zelensky has consistently rejected recognizing these regions as Russian territory, although he did suggest last month that a referendum on potential territorial concessions could be held down the road as a possibility.

Adding to the sense of momentum, former President Donald Trump has weighed in, stating that Moscow and Kiev are "reasonably close" to a settlement. He believes a deal can be struck "pretty soon," a sentiment that echoes Witkoff's measured optimism. Trump even plans to meet with Zelensky in Davos, a meeting confirmed by Zelensky’s spokesperson, Sergey Nikiforov.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the US delegation, which reportedly includes Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, is expected in Moscow later today. A meeting with President Putin is scheduled immediately upon their arrival, with the Ukrainian settlement and "other related topics" on the agenda. It's interesting to note that Putin also revealed plans to discuss contributing funds to Trump’s Board of Peace, an initiative focused on supporting Gaza's recovery. This seemingly unrelated discussion suggests a broader diplomatic landscape at play, with potential linkages between different global conflicts.

The suggestion of using frozen Russian assets for the Gaza recovery effort is certainly a bold move, and one that will likely be met with mixed reactions. Regardless, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether this momentum can translate into a lasting peace agreement. We can only hope that the parties involved seize this opportunity to de-escalate tensions and bring an end to this devastating conflict.
