Gunman On the Run in Rural Australia After Triple Fatal Shooting
Australia Massacre: Gunman on the Loose! Will He S...
LAKE CARGELLIGO, Australia – A quiet Australian town is reeling after a gunman opened fire at two locations Thursday afternoon, leaving three dead and one seriously wounded. Police are currently hunting for the suspect, who is believed to be armed and mobile.
The incident unfolded around 4 PM local time in Lake Cargelligo, a tight-knit community of roughly 1,500 people nestled in the heart of New South Wales. Emergency services were called to separate addresses after reports of gunfire. What they found was horrific: two couples, a man and a woman at each location, had been targeted in quick succession.
According to Assistant Commissioner Andy Holland, two women and one man were pronounced dead at the scene. The surviving man was rushed to a hospital and is currently listed in serious but stable condition. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but police have identified a suspect, though his name is being withheld at this time. I can't imagine the shock this is sending through such a small community.
While authorities are remaining tight-lipped about the suspect's relationship to the victims, Sydney's *Daily Telegraph* newspaper, citing unnamed police sources, is reporting that the victims may include the suspect's former partner, her new partner, and two of her relatives. If this is accurate, this could be a truly awful case of domestic violence spilling into the public sphere.
State police are pulling out all the stops to locate the suspect, deploying tactical units from neighboring districts to Lake Cargelligo. The town has essentially been placed on lockdown to prevent the suspect from escaping. Residents have been urged to remain indoors, and authorities sent geo-targeted text messages to warn the public to avoid the area.
“The offender is believed to have fled in a vehicle,” Commissioner Holland told reporters, emphasizing the need for caution. “The offender is mobile, hence … we're asking people in those areas to remain inside their premises for their own safety.”
Roy Butler, a local member of parliament, described the shooting as "tragic news" for the town, which lies about 600 kilometers west of Sydney. “It’s a terrible situation, and it’s still live, so we don’t have much information. My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” Butler said, echoing the sentiments of many across the state.
The timing of this tragedy is particularly poignant. It occurred on Australia's National Day of Mourning, a day set aside to commemorate the 15 lives lost in the recent mass shooting at a Hannukah celebration in Sydney. It's a grim reminder of the ongoing struggle to address gun violence, even after the Australian Parliament passed new gun restrictions just this Tuesday in response to the earlier tragedy.
