Elon Musk's SHOCKING Plan: Will Rural Spain Power ALL of Europe?!
Current Affairs 23 January 2026

Elon Musk, ever the visionary, has set his sights on transforming the forgotten corners of Spain into a Solar energy powerhouse for all of Europe. He envisions a future where the rolling hills and sun-drenched plains of "Empty Spain" (España vaciada), currently grappling with dwindling populations, are covered in solar panels, pumping clean energy into the continent's grid.

Elon Musk's SHOCKING Plan: Will Rural Spain Power ...

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO didn't mince words. He bluntly stated that areas with sparse populations, specifically mentioning rural Spain and Sicily, possess the potential to host massive solar installations, easily capable of meeting Europe’s entire electricity demand. It's a bold claim, to be sure, but coming from Musk, it's delivered with an air of inevitability.

During a conversation with BlackRock's Larry Fink, Musk emphasized that the technology isn't the hurdle. "We already have the technology," he asserted. "What we need is the will and the investment to deploy it." He’s got a point. We’ve seen incredible advancements in solar efficiency and storage in recent years. The real challenge, as always, is getting everyone on board and opening the purse strings.

Musk pointed to China's impressive solar farm infrastructure as proof that large-scale solar projects are not just pipe dreams. He argued that similar projects, strategically placed in rural Spain or Sicily, could easily address Europe's energy needs. He even threw out the possibility of developing similar projects in the U.S., suggesting that places like Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico could become massive solar power plants, taking advantage of their vast, underutilized landscapes. I remember driving through Nevada last year, and the sheer scale of empty land out there is hard to fathom. He may be onto something.

While Solar energy is already playing a growing role in Europe's renewable energy mix, with countries like Spain and Germany actively expanding their solar capacity, Musk's vision takes it to a whole new level. It’s about dedicating significant swathes of rural land specifically for continental power generation. However, European governments and institutions, including the Spanish government, haven't yet officially embraced Musk's ambitious plan. It remains a proposal, albeit a very compelling one.

Beyond solar, Musk also touched on the coming robot revolution, predicting a future where robots outnumber humans. He mentioned Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus, is already performing simple tasks in Tesla's factories and might be available for purchase as early as 2027. It’s an exciting, and slightly unnerving, prospect. Musk cautioned, however, that developing advanced AI requires caution... The implications for society are huge, and it's a conversation we need to be having now.
