**School Lunch? More Like a Luxury Meal: Turkish Private Schools Hike Fees, Spark Outrage**
College Meal Costs SKYROCKET! Students Face ₺1,650...
Parents in Turkey are facing sticker shock as private schools appear to be finding creative ways around government regulations designed to limit tuition increases. While the Ministry of National Education (MEB) capped tuition hikes, reports are surfacing that schools are significantly inflating the costs of mandatory meal plans, study sessions, and even textbooks. It seems some institutions are determined to maintain their revenue streams, regardless of the financial burden on families.
The most glaring example of this is the staggering increase in daily meal prices. Last year, parents were paying anywhere from 200 to 590 Turkish Lira (TL) per day for their child's lunch. This year? Some schools are charging a jaw-dropping 1,650 TL – a more than 200% increase! That's more than many families spend on groceries for a whole week. Honestly, you could probably have a gourmet meal at a top restaurant for that price.
The MEB's new regulations allow for tuition increases based on a formula involving the consumer price index (CPI) and the producer price index (PPI), resulting in a maximum increase of around 30% for returning students and roughly 44% for incoming students in certain grades. While these caps were intended to protect families, it seems some schools are simply shifting costs elsewhere. Requiring parents to purchase expensive meal plans, supplementary study sessions, and textbooks as a condition of enrollment effectively circumvents the spirit of the regulations.
Consider the examples. Bilfen Schools are charging 1,375,000 TL for 9th grade tuition, but then add on another 86,000 TL for books, 84,590 TL for study sessions, and 31,748 TL for uniforms. And let's not forget the meal fee at Bilfen Çamlıca College, which has jumped from 156,000 TL to 247,500 TL. It's a similar story at TED Rönesans, BJK Kabataş Foundation, İTÜ Geliştirme Vakfı, and Özel Anabilim Primary School, all of which are experiencing significant increases in meal plan costs. Even Robert College, known for its high fees, can now charge over 3 million TL annually when factoring in meals, accommodation, and payment plans.
It's hard not to feel for parents caught in this situation. They want the best education for their children, but these escalating costs are becoming unsustainable. It remains to be seen if the MEB will take further action to address these loopholes and ensure that private education remains accessible, not just a privilege for the wealthy.
