5-Year-Old Detained?! Minneapolis Erupts in Fury - What Happens Next?!
Current Affairs 23 January 2026

Minneapolis is bracing for what could be a volatile Friday as protests are planned across the city in response to the Trump administration’s escalating Immigration crackdown. The powder keg atmosphere was only intensified by Vice President J.D. Vance's visit on Thursday, a visit that coincided with mounting outrage over the detention of a five-year-old boy.

5-Year-Old Detained?! Minneapolis Erupts in Fury -...

The image, now circulating widely online and on cable news, of little Liam Conejo Ramos being escorted by an ICE agent, his Spiderman backpack a stark contrast to the somber scene, has clearly struck a nerve. Dressed in a simple checkered jacket and a too-big blue hat, the visible fear in the child's face is truly heartbreaking. Liam and his father, Adrián Alexander Conejo Arias, both asylum seekers from Ecuador, were taken into custody earlier this week near their home in a quiet Minneapolis suburb.

Frankly, it’s hard not to feel a sense of profound unease looking at that picture. It echoes other moments in our history that we'd rather forget, and it arrives at a particularly sensitive time. The Twin Cities are still reeling from the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by a federal agent just last month, an incident that has already frayed community trust.

In direct response to the increased presence of ICE and Border Patrol agents, organizers are calling for a city-wide shutdown this Friday. The call to action has seen incredible support, with over 500 businesses and restaurants pledging to close their doors in solidarity with the immigrant community. A major march is planned in downtown Minneapolis, and similar actions are slated for major cities like New York, Chicago, and Seattle, potentially signaling a coordinated national response.

Vance, predictably, used his visit to deflect blame, echoing familiar Trump administration talking points. "The reason why things have gotten so out of hand is because of the failure of cooperation from state and local authorities," he stated during a press conference. He specifically called out Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both Democrats currently under Justice Department investigation for allegedly obstructing federal Immigration operations, accusing them of failing to "make life a little easier" for ICE agents. It's a claim both offices vehemently deny.

Addressing the highly sensitive issue of Liam’s detention, Vance initially acknowledged the jarring nature of the situation. However, he quickly pivoted, stating, "His dad was an illegal alien. And when they went to arrest his illegal alien father, the father ran. So, the story is that ICE detained a five-year-old. What are they supposed to do? Are they supposed to let a five-year-old child freeze to death?" He further argued, rather coldly, that having children should not grant immunity from law enforcement.

Complicating matters further, Columbia Heights Public Schools has issued a statement alleging that Liam and his father were detained right after returning from preschool. Even more disturbingly, the school claims that ICE agents allegedly asked Liam to knock on his own front door to see if anyone else was inside, effectively "using a 5-year-old as bait." If true, this would represent a deeply troubling escalation of tactics, and it's likely to further inflame tensions as the city prepares for Friday's protests.
