Benidorm Tourist Boom! Can it Handle the Crushing Crowd?

Benidorm Tourist Boom! Can it Handle the Crushing Crowd?
Current Affairs 23 January 2026

Benidorm just keeps on shining! The popular Spanish resort town has smashed through the 3 million tourist barrier in 2025, clocking up a staggering 16 million overnight stays. It's impressive stuff, really, and shows that Benidorm's appeal is definitely enduring, especially with a noticeable surge in international visitors heading that way.

Benidorm Tourist Boom! Can it Handle the Crushing ...

The big reveal came courtesy of Visit Benidorm's annual report, presented at the Madrid International Tourism Fair (Fitur) 2026. Mayor Toni Pérez and foundation manager Leire Bilbao were on hand to deliver the good news, although the atmosphere was understandably somber at the start, with a moment of silence observed to honor the victims of that awful train accident in Adamuz. Hard to celebrate without acknowledging the bigger picture, right?

Anyway, back to the numbers. Preliminary data (pending the final December figures, of course) shows that Benidorm welcomed a whopping 3,058,623 visitors in 2025. That’s a solid 7.7% jump compared to the year before! Mayor Pérez was quick to point out that these are just the preliminary figures, and we can expect even bigger numbers once the National Statistics Institute (INE) releases their complete data. So, watch this space!

But it's not just visitor numbers that are up. Overnight stays also saw a healthy increase, reaching 16,211,131 in 2025 – a 3.4% rise from 2024. Hotels are still the big players, accounting for 11.6 million of those stays and hosting 2.45 million guests (up 4.3%). The average hotel occupancy rate was a very respectable 82.2%, and people are sticking around for an average of almost five days, which is great for the local economy.

Interestingly, holiday apartments are also having a moment. They saw a significant increase, with 2.56 million overnight stays (a massive 20.3% increase!), bringing in 483,516 visitors (up 36.9%). It seems people are increasingly opting for the flexibility and independence that apartments offer, and with a 75.7% occupancy rate and an average stay of 5.5 days, it's a booming sector.

Even campsites are thriving! With 124,443 visitors spending over 2 million nights under canvas (or in caravans, let's be honest), they boast an incredible 93.9% occupancy rate. And get this: the average stay is a whopping 20.1 days! Talk about getting away from it all.

Mayor Pérez is understandably pleased with the results. He called 2025 "an excellent year" and attributed the success to ongoing efforts to promote Benidorm both at home and abroad. The strategy of attracting high-profile events, like the recent World Cyclocross Championship, to fill those traditionally quieter periods seems to be paying off big time.

And it's not just about tourism. The report also highlighted positive employment trends, with Benidorm ending 2025 with an unemployment rate of just 9.41%, a noticeable drop compared to the previous year. Seems like things are looking pretty bright for the jewel of the Costa Blanca.
