Charli XCX: 'Brat' Era OVER?! Sundance Shocker Signals New Music!

The era of neon-drenched, hyper-pop "Brat" anthems might be winding down, but don't think for a second that Charli XCX is slowing down. Quite the opposite, actually. The pop innovator is trading in sold-out stadiums for the somewhat less-glamorous world of indie filmmaking, making her acting debut at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Charli XCX: 'Brat' Era OVER?! Sundance Shocker Sig...

As the Sundance Institute grapples with potentially relocating its iconic, 45-year-old festival from its snowy Utah home, Charli XCX injected some serious star power into the proceedings. She headlined a double feature this past Friday at the Eccles Theatre, showcasing two films that represent a clear shift in her creative trajectory: Gregg Araki’s long-awaited directorial comeback, "I Want Your Sex," and writer-director Aidan Zamiri’s debut feature, "The Moment." Both films, it seems, benefit from Charli's distinctive presence.

"I Want Your Sex," marking Araki's first feature in a decade, sees Charli taking on a comedic role as Minerva, the "bitchy American girlfriend" of Cooper Hoffman’s character, Elliot. The premise is pure Araki: Elliot takes a job as a sexual muse for the artist Erika Tracy (played by Olivia Wilde), which inevitably leads to murder and a whole lot of tangled power dynamics. It sounds like a wild ride, to say the least. I’ve always been a fan of Araki's fearless, boundary-pushing style, so I'm genuinely curious to see how Charli fits into that aesthetic.

It's intriguing to consider the parallels between Charli's on-screen persona and her real-life pop star image. She literally hopped off the "brat" tour bus and straight onto Araki’s set, joining an ensemble cast that includes Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, and some familiar faces from Araki's past work. It's a testament to her work ethic and willingness to experiment.

Speaking about Charli's dedication, Cooper Hoffman had this to say: "She came to set right after performing at some stadium. It was incredible, it was so fantastic. She did this whole long, incredible show, and then showed up and killed it. She plays my girlfriend who doesn’t want to have sex with me, and she’s hilarious." High praise indeed! It sounds like she's bringing that same energy and charisma that defines her music to this new acting venture. While the "Brat" era officially ends, it will be exciting to see what the next chapter brings for this multi-talented artist.
