SIA New York Flights Hit as US Snowstorm Triggers Cancellations
US Snowstorm Chaos! SIA Flights Hit, Thousands Str...
Winter Storm Fern is proving to be a real pain for travelers, and Singapore Airlines (SIA) is among the latest to feel the storm's bite. The airline announced the cancellation of several flights to and from New York on Saturday, Jan 24, 2026, citing the severe snowstorm currently blanketing much of the United States. It's a messy situation, to say the least.
Apparently, Winter Storm Fern is disrupting air travel all over the place. Airlines are scrambling to cancel flights, issue warnings about delays, and offer travel waivers as ice, snow, and high winds sweep across major hubs and regional airports, particularly in the South, East, and central parts of the country. It's not just New York feeling the chill, that's for sure.
SIA has confirmed that a total of 10 flights have been grounded due to the storm. "As the situation remains fluid, other SIA flights may be affected," the airline stated in their advisory. It's a prudent warning, and one that anyone planning to fly should take seriously. The airline is urging customers to check their website for the most current information, which is definitely good advice. On the bright side, SIA says they'll rebook affected passengers on alternative flights or offer full refunds for the unused portion of their tickets. That's something, at least.
And it's not just SIA. According to FlightAware, the flight tracking website, over 3,200 flights within, into, or out of the US had already been cancelled as of Saturday evening. That's a huge number, and it paints a picture of just how widespread this disruption is. Air India has also reportedly cancelled flights to and from New York and Newark, New Jersey, due to the storm.
The impact stretches far beyond the Northeast, too. Snow fell in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas on Friday. This was just a precursor to what forecasters are calling a major winter storm, one that's expected to converge with some seriously frigid Arctic air and basically engulf a huge swath of the United States, stretching all the way from the Rockies to the Eastern Seaboard. As of Friday, at least 14 states and the District of Columbia had declared weather emergencies. Major US airlines have already cautioned passengers to brace themselves for sudden flight changes and cancellations.
Government agencies have issued warnings and advisories for winter storm conditions, ice storms, and extreme cold across a wide area. Forecasters are even predicting "catastrophic" ice accumulations along the southern edge of the storm's snow belt, with sleet and freezing rain expected to glaze the southern Plains, the lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, and the Southeast. It's shaping up to be a rough few days for anyone in the path of this storm. For travelers, especially, flexibility and patience are going to be key.
