Gaziantep Basketbol Crushes Rivals! Can They Hold the Top Spot?
Sports 25 January 2026

Gaziantep Basketbol is determined to stay at the top of the Türkiye Sigorta Basketball League. They're heading into their next home game against Konya Büyükşehir Belediyespor with a laser focus – a win isn't just preferred, it's practically mandatory to maintain their hard-earned lead.

Gaziantep Basketbol Crushes Rivals! Can They Hold ...

Sitting pretty with a stellar 17-2 record after 19 games, Gaziantep boasts 36 points, putting them in the coveted top spot. They're currently riding a ten-game win streak, and you can bet they're not keen on seeing that come to an end. The team's ambition is clear: not just to hold their position, but to create some breathing room between themselves and Konya Büyükşehir Belediyespor, currently nipping at their heels in third place.

Head Coach Şemsettin Baş, in an interview with AA, emphasized the challenges of navigating a relentless schedule without the benefit of a mid-season break. He also pointed out that Konya Büyükşehir Belediyespor has been a bit of a thorn in their side, having beaten them in both the Türkiye Sigorta Federation Cup semi-final (back on January 16th) and in the first leg of the league season. Ouch.

"We know we're up against a strong and well-prepared Konya Büyükşehir Belediyespor team," Baş acknowledged. "But we're playing on our home court, and our goals for the season remain firmly in sight. We absolutely want to win. Especially if we want to safeguard our lead, a victory is essential, regardless of who the opponent is. We did lose to them earlier in both the league and the cup, but we're a different beast when we play at home." That's the spirit!

Baş was quick to draw a line between the cup games and the league, conceding that player performance can fluctuate, and injuries are always a possibility. Still, he's confident that if they stick to their system and maintain their tempo, they'll come out on top. It's a simple formula, but as any coach will tell you, execution is everything.

He also noted something that most basketball fans already know: the second half of the season is always a tougher grind than the first. "The second half is here, and every game is essentially a final. We want to win every single one. We've got seven home games and seven away games remaining. We don't really count the Yalova game, all played. If we can secure all our home games and grab as many away wins as possible, I believe we can keep our lead. We're currently on a 10-game roll, but the league is dynamic. Teams strengthen during the season, and coaching changes can shake things up. Each game is a battle, and we're determined to keep our streak alive. It won't be a walk in the park, though; our opponents will be pulling out all the stops to make things difficult for us."

And then came the call to action. Baş appealed directly to the Gaziantep faithful. "I'm urging our fans to pack the arena for this game. Every time we play away, the home teams fill their venues, often small and intimidating, making it a real challenge for us. We need the legendary Gaziantep team's supporters to create that same atmosphere at home. If we defend well on our home court, stick to our game plan, and have a packed house cheering us on, I'm confident that we'll be the ones celebrating with our fans at the end." I've seen what a difference a roaring crowd can make, and in a tight game, it can be the ultimate edge.

Team captain Yiğitcan Turna echoed the sentiment, stating that their priority is to remain undefeated at home and to rack up as many away wins as possible to secure their position at the summit. The pressure is on, but Gaziantep Basketbol seems ready to embrace the challenge.
