Greenland's Capital Plunged Into Darkness! Will It Ever Recover?
Current Affairs 25 January 2026

Nuuk, Greenland – The lights are back on in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, after a rather unsettling Saturday night. A widespread Power outage plunged the city of 20,000 into darkness around 10:30 p.m. local time, according to AFP reports. It wasn’t just the electricity that went out; internet connectivity also took a major hit, leaving residents disconnected as well as powerless.

Greenland's Capital Plunged Into Darkness! Will It...

Imagine that for a moment: a modern capital city suddenly thrown back into what must have felt like a much more primitive era. Especially in a place as remote as Greenland, those connections to the outside world are critical, so I can only imagine the sense of unease that settled over the city.

Thankfully, the darkness didn't last forever. Nukissiorfiit, Greenland's national energy company, took to Facebook early Sunday morning to announce the good news: power, water, and heating had been fully restored across the city. Crisis averted, it seems. It's always good to see these companies get the power back on quickly.

NetBlocks, the internet monitoring organization, confirmed the significant drop in connectivity across Greenland, pinpointing Nuuk as the epicenter of the disruption. It’s a reminder of just how reliant we are on these systems, and how vulnerable we become when they fail.

The timing of the blackout is certainly… interesting. It comes just days after the Greenlandic government released a new crisis preparedness guide for residents. Was this some kind of practice run, albeit an unplanned one? I doubt it, but the irony isn't lost on me.

And let's not forget the backdrop to all this: the rather bizarre chapter in Greenland's recent history when former U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly floated the idea of acquiring the island. Remember that? It feels like a fever dream now. He reportedly dropped the notion after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday, claiming they'd reached some kind of "framework" agreement. What that framework entails, nobody seems to know just yet. Perhaps it's just a framework for never mentioning the acquisition again!

While the Power outage was undoubtedly a significant inconvenience for the residents of Nuuk, it also serves as a reminder of the challenges and vulnerabilities faced by communities in remote and geographically isolated regions. Hopefully, lessons have been learned and measures will be taken to prevent a repeat occurrence. For now, though, it's business as usual under the (restored) lights of Nuuk.
