Okay, folks, buckle up your go-karts because Nintendo just dropped a bombshell of Mario goodness on us this weekend with a surprise Nintendo Direct. This wasn't just a quick peek, this was a deep dive into "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," and let me tell you, it looks like they're pulling out all the stops.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie?! Nintendo Just SHOCKED t...
Hosted by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto himself, the presentation wasted no time. We were immediately thrown into an extended version of that desert motorcycle scene we've seen glimpses of before. Mario and Luigi, those intrepid plumbers, are tearing across the sands, heading towards what any "Super Mario Odyssey" player will instantly recognize: that upside-down pyramid from the Sand Kingdom. Remember that place? Good times.
Their mission? Clearing a blocked Warp Pipe. Naturally. After powering up with some classic Fire Flowers, they venture into the darkness, and that's when the magic happens. The iconic underground music swells, and they reach the obstruction... and BAM! Yoshi's inside. But here's the kicker: he TALKS! Forget the guttural noises we're used to. This Yoshi's got a voice. Initially, he seems a little spooked by Mario and Luigi, which is a fun twist. But don't worry, later shots in the trailer suggest he quickly becomes part of the crew. And new artwork? It’s all Yoshi, all the time. So much Yoshi.
But the trailer didn't stop there. We also got a glimpse of Birdo and Mouser hanging out together. Now, that's a deep cut for the "Super Mario Bros. 2" fans out there. It makes you wonder if Princess Peach is off on her own adventure early in the film while the brothers are busy in the Sand Kingdom. It's certainly got my speculation engine firing on all cylinders. We also finally see Lakitu making his big-screen debut, pelting Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi with projectiles. Talk about a pain in the shell!
And the grand finale? Pure Nintendo zaniness. Yoshi's wielding a gun that looks suspiciously like the old SNES Super Scope, while Toad is cradling Baby Luigi and Baby Mario. They're all facing off against a T-Rex that seems to have wandered straight out of "Super Mario Odyssey." Seriously, this movie is throwing everything at the wall. I, for one, am here for it.
The Direct wrapped up with a quick Yoshi history lesson and a check-in with Chris Meledandri from Illumination. He confirmed that the animation is done and the film is now in post-production. And get this: they're re-recording themes from the "Super Mario Galaxy" games with a 70-piece orchestra! Talk about upping the ante on the nostalgia factor. But one big question remains: who's voicing Yoshi? They're keeping that one under wraps for now. And what about Rosalina and Bowser Jr.? After getting their spotlight in the previous Direct, they were MIA this time around.
Of course, we know the returning cast is stacked, with Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. But seriously, who is Yoshi?! The suspense is killing me! I guess we'll just have to wait and see when "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" hits theaters. But based on this trailer, it's shaping up to be a wild ride.
