France Bans Social Media For Kids?! What Happens Next is Shocking!
Current Affairs 27 January 2026

France is taking a bold step to shield its youth from the potentially harmful effects of Social media. The National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, just approved a bill that would ban social media for children under 15. Supported by President Macron himself, this legislation aims to tackle what many see as excessive screen time and the manipulative nature of online platforms.

The vote, which took place in an overnight session, saw a significant majority – 130 to 21 – in favor of the ban. Now, the bill heads to the Senate. If it passes there, France will join Australia as one of the few countries to implement nationwide Social media restrictions for children. This is a pretty significant move, signaling a growing concern about the impact these platforms have on developing minds.

And it's not just about social media access. The proposed legislation also targets smartphone use, specifically banning them in all French high schools. Macron has been pushing for this bill to be fast-tracked, aiming for implementation by the start of the school year in September. He’s been quite vocal about the need to protect children's brains and emotions from being exploited by "American platforms nor Chinese algorithms," as he put it in a recent video.

This move follows a report from France's public health agency, ANSES, highlighting the potentially harmful effects of platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, particularly on adolescent girls. It's a concern shared by many parents, myself included, who worry about the constant exposure to curated content and the potential for addiction and mental health issues.

France isn't alone in its concerns. Australia already barred children under 16 from platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook in December, with hefty fines for non-compliance. Even here in the US, these social media giants are facing increased scrutiny. Meta, TikTok, and YouTube are currently embroiled in their first product liability trial in Los Angeles, accused of knowingly designing their platforms to be addictive to children. It's a landmark case that could have serious repercussions.

Frankly, it's about time. While social media can offer some benefits, the potential downsides for young, impressionable minds are becoming increasingly clear. Whether this bill is the perfect solution remains to be seen, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. It’s a complex issue, and I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot more debate and legislative action on this front in the coming years.
