Movies & TV Series 27 January 2026

Justine Triet, riding high on the wave of "Anatomy of a Fall's" success, including that shiny Palme d'Or and an Oscar win, is already lining up her next project. And guess what? It's a thriller called "Fonda," which is already creating a serious buzz. I mean, who wouldn't be excited after her last film?

The cast is shaping up to be something truly special. We're talking Mia Goth, who's been absolutely killing it lately ("Frankenstein"), alongside the brilliant Andrew Scott ("All of Us Strangers"). Then there's Frank Dillane, a Cannes Best Actor winner ("Urchin") and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett ("Candyman"). But wait, it gets better! Word on the street is that the amazing Allison Janney ("I, Tonya") is in talks for a major role. This is going to be an acting powerhouse.

So, what's the fuss all about? Well, "Fonda" is gearing up to be *the* hot ticket at the upcoming European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. Triet is teaming up again with her "Anatomy of a Fall" producers, Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion, and mk2 Films is handling the sales. It's like the dream team is back together, ready to deliver another knockout.

Apparently, the film will be an ensemble piece with Mia Goth taking the lead. Initially, she was considered for a supporting role, but she impressed Triet so much that she landed the starring part. That's a pretty amazing story, right? Janney and Scott are also set for substantial roles. More casting is in the works, with production aiming to kick off in spring 2026. That feels like a while away, but I'm sure it will fly by!

The official synopsis paints a picture of a psychological thriller: “A psychological thriller set in a seemingly idyllic huis clos, Fonda takes us on a vertiginous dive into the shifting limits of a sound mind, as grief and obsession take hold.” It sounds intense, right? The title, by the way, isn't a nod to the famous Fonda acting family, but rather to an institution that's central to the story. Triet is also handling the screenplay herself.

mk2 is partnering with Studiocanal, which is financing and co-producing the film and have grabbed distribution rights for a bunch of key territories like France, Germany, and even Australia and New Zealand. This means it's going to get a wide theatrical release, which is fantastic to see in the current streaming landscape.

Following the phenomenal success of "Anatomy of a Fall," everyone was clamoring to work with Triet. Even Steven Spielberg expressed interest! There was talk of an adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel, "Monica," with Cate Blanchett potentially starring. But in the end, Triet chose "Fonda," and sources say it's in the same vein as "Anatomy of a Fall." If that's true, we're in for another thought-provoking and gripping cinematic experience.

Fionnuala Jamison, Managing Director of mk2 Films, summed it up perfectly: “Fonda promises to bring audiences another major cinematic moment by delving into the depths of the human mind and resurfacing as a thriller of rare intelligence and emotional force destined to be a top awards contender and box office hit.” High praise indeed! Let's see if "Fonda" can live up to the hype.
