K-Drama's Global Twist?! See Where 'Can This Love Be Translated?' Takes You!

South Korean dramas, or K-dramas as they're affectionately known, have been steadily conquering the world, one binge-watching session at a time. The latest to capture hearts is the romantic comedy "Can This Love Be Translated?", and it's not just the adorable leads, Kim Seon-ho and Go Youn-jung, that are drawing viewers in. The series has topped Netflix’s weekly non-English series chart, landing in the Top 10 in a whopping 60 countries. But there's another interesting angle to its global appeal: the filming locations!

K-Drama's Global Twist?! See Where 'Can This Love ...

While the story takes our protagonists to Italy, Japan, and even Canada, a surprising number of these "overseas" scenes were actually filmed right in South Korea. Talk about movie magic! This has sparked a surge of interest, with fans eager to pinpoint these clever stand-ins and perhaps even recreate their favorite moments from the show. I have to admit, I was fooled too – the production design is really top-notch.

So, where exactly did they manage to conjure up the illusion of international travel? The luxurious hotel rendezvous between Mu-hee and Ho-jin, seemingly set in Italy, was filmed at the Peninsula Lounge in the Lotte Hotel Seoul. Apparently, the Lotte Hotel Seoul is also famous for its winter strawberry buffet and live jazz performances, so you can make a day of it. The address is 30 Eulji-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, for those wanting to check it out.

Remember the party scene where Mu-hee meets Sota Fukushi (Kurosawa Hiro), giving off serious Tokyo vibes? That was actually shot at the Raum Art Center, a versatile cultural space in Seoul (301-63 Seongsu-dong 2-ga, Seongdong-gu). The center is a concert venue and popular wedding destination. Makes you wonder how many other K-dramas have used this space!

For a taste of something a little more down-to-earth, the alleyway stroll between Ho-jin and his friend takes place in Sinheung Market in Haebangchon. This isn't just any old market; it's a hip date spot for locals. It sits below Mount Nam and was once a shantytown, revitalized by a 2017 urban regeneration project. It's now a cool blend of tradition and trendy cafes.

The supposed Italian winery, where Ho-jin meets his mother? That's Sanmeoru Farm in Paju, Gyeonggi Province (67-1 Gaekhyeon-ri, Jeokseong-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi). Despite the European feel, it’s known for its Korean wild grapes! They offer tours, wine-making demonstrations, and even hands-on activities for kids – grape jam and chocolate-making. It’s a brilliant example of how a location can be transformed with a little creativity.

Finally, that charming Italian restaurant where Ho-jin and Mu-hee spend quality time? It's Hwiwoo Cafe in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province (133-30 Seonyu-gil, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi). The yellow building boasts an outdoor garden and terrace, plus it's right next to a railway line. Next time you're in Korea, skip the plane ticket and just visit these locations. You might just find yourself falling in love, K-drama style!
