Trump's Iran Warning: Gulf Buildup Sparks WWIII Fears?!
Current Affairs 28 January 2026

Tensions in the Gulf are ratcheting up once again, folks. Former President Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, claiming "time is running out" for a nuclear deal, while simultaneously boasting about a significant U.S. military build-up in the region. It's a familiar playbook, and one that has many understandably on edge.

Trump's Iran Warning: Gulf Buildup Sparks WWIII Fe...

Tehran, predictably, isn't taking the saber-rattling lying down. Iranian officials have declared their armed forces are prepared to respond to any aggression with "their fingers on the trigger," a direct response to Trump's rather colorful description of a "massive Armada" supposedly "moving quickly, with great power, enthusiasm, and purpose" towards Iran. You've got to admit, the man has a way with words – even if those words are stoking geopolitical anxiety.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was equally firm, asserting Iran’s military is ready to respond "immediately and powerfully" to any aggression by land or sea. The official line from Tehran remains unchanged: their nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, a point they've consistently reiterated despite accusations from the U.S. and its allies. It's the same song and dance we've been hearing for years, but the stakes feel higher this time.

Trump, in his own inimitable style, took to Truth Social to reiterate his stance. "Hopefully Iran will quickly 'Come to the Table' and negotiate a fair and equitable deal - NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS," he posted. He even compared this naval force to the one he supposedly dispatched to Venezuela before, claiming it's "ready, willing, and able to rapidly fulfil its mission, with speed and violence, if necessary." Honestly, the use of language like that doesn't exactly inspire confidence in a peaceful resolution.

The former president also referenced U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites last June (something I hadn't even remembered!), warning, "The next attack will be far worse! Don't make that happen again." Araghchi fired back, insisting Iran is open to a fair nuclear deal, but only "on equal footing, and free from coercion, threats, and intimidation." He also reiterated that nuclear weapons have "no place in our security calculations."

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, it seems there's little to no actual negotiation happening. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi indicated that despite "exchanges of messages," no formal talks are underway. That's hardly encouraging, especially when coupled with the very visible military movements.

And those movements are very real. BBC Verify, using open-source intelligence, has confirmed a recent U.S. military build-up, including the arrival of at least 15 fighter jets at a Jordanian airbase. Other bases in the region, including those in Qatar and Diego Garcia, have also seen increased activity. We're talking cargo planes, refueling aircraft, and even spy planes and drones operating near Iranian airspace. It's a tense situation, to say the least, and one that demands careful monitoring. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail before things truly escalate.
