Big news for all you fantasy nerds (myself included)! Brandon Sanderson's epic Cosmere universe is officially heading to Apple TV+, and it sounds like this adaptation is being handled with the care and reverence it deserves. According to *The Hollywood Reporter*, Apple has snagged the rights to bring Sanderson's interconnected worlds to the small (and big) screen, with plans to start with a *Mistborn* film and a *Stormlight Archive* television series. And the best part? Sanderson is reportedly retaining a significant degree of creative control.
Sanderson's Cosmere to Apple TV?! Author's Control...
This is huge. We're not talking about a studio just grabbing the rights and running wild. Sanderson himself will be deeply involved as a writer, producer, and consultant, even having approval over major decisions. Compare this to George R.R. Martin's comments on *House of the Dragon* – where he apparently offered suggestions that were ultimately ignored – and you can see why this news is particularly exciting. I've always felt Sanderson's strength lies not just in his world-building, but in his understanding of his own material. Letting him steer the ship is a smart move.
Adding even more to the good news, Blue Marble, the production company behind the critically acclaimed *Pachinko*, is already on board for the *Stormlight Archive* series. That’s a promising sign. *Pachinko* was beautifully done, demonstrating a commitment to quality and thoughtful storytelling. If they bring that same level of care to Roshar, we could be in for something truly special.
One of the things that makes the Cosmere so appealing is its accessibility. You can dive into *Mistborn* or *The Stormlight Archive* without needing to have read everything else. While characters *might* hop between worlds (a tantalizing prospect for long-time fans), each series stands on its own two feet. It’s a sprawling universe, yes, but a surprisingly user-friendly one. Beyond the screen, the Cosmere already has a strong presence in the tabletop gaming world, including a *Stormlight Archive* TTRPG and a *Mistborn* board game. Clearly, there's an appetite for this stuff.
Sanderson, ever the workhorse, is already thinking ahead, with plans for *Mistborn* Era 3 and more *Elantris* novels in the pipeline. He isn't slowing down on the book front, which is reassuring. Following the announcement, he addressed fans on the Cosmere subreddit, explaining that he actually traveled to Hollywood back in May to find the right partner. He hasn't been on this particular quest since 2016. He also revealed he intends to write the *Mistborn* screenplay himself over the next five months! Talk about dedication.
Sanderson himself is approaching this with a deliberate, focused mindset. “Focus on doing it carefully and right,” he said, emphasizing the importance of quality. “I promise not to get too distracted to do books. However, if I want this done right, I need to give some real attention and heart to it now.” He's clearly learned from past experiences. Remember, Sanderson stepped in to finish Robert Jordan's *Wheel of Time* series, and he hasn’t been shy about his criticisms of Amazon's adaptation. Hopefully, this time around, the outcome will be different. I, for one, am cautiously optimistic. This could be amazing.
