EU Auto Market SHOCK: Van & Truck Sales PLUMMET! What's Fueling the Bus Boom?
Automotive 29 January 2026

Brussels – The European Commercial vehicle market presented a mixed bag of results for 2025, with vans and trucks hitting the brakes while the bus sector surprisingly accelerated. New data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) paints a picture of shifting priorities and potentially changing economic winds across the continent.

EU Auto Market SHOCK: Van & Truck Sales PLUMMET! W...

Specifically, light Commercial vehicle sales – we're talking your delivery vans and work vehicles – took a notable dip of 8.8% across the EU last year. Truck sales weren't far behind, sliding down 6.2%. It's a bit of a downer, especially considering the vital role these vehicles play in keeping goods moving and economies ticking over.

Breaking it down, the ACEA's figures revealed that 1,447,273 new vans were registered in the EU during 2025. While that’s still a considerable number, it's a clear step down from the previous year. Major economic powerhouses like France (-5.6%), Germany (-5.4%), and Italy (-5%) all felt the pinch, though Spain bucked the trend with a respectable 11.7% increase. Perhaps Spain's tourism sector is driving some of that growth? It's hard to say for sure without digging deeper.

The truck market experienced a similar downturn. New registrations across the EU totaled 307,460 units, reflecting that 6.2% year-on-year drop. Again, Germany (-12.2%), France (-9%), and Spain (-3.6%) all saw fewer trucks rolling off the production lines. You have to wonder if this is linked to wider economic uncertainty, or perhaps businesses are holding off on major investments.

However, not all was doom and gloom. The bus market actually saw a surge, with new registrations jumping 7.5% to reach 38,238 units. Germany (+28%) and Poland (+16.6%) led the charge, suggesting significant investments in public transport infrastructure in those regions. On the other hand, Italy (-15.9%) and Spain (-4%) saw declines, which is a bit puzzling given Spain's van market performance.

Despite the growing buzz around electric vehicles, diesel still reigns supreme in the commercial sector. In 2025, diesel vehicles accounted for a whopping 80.7% of new light commercial vehicle sales, 93.2% of new truck sales, and 62.1% of new bus sales across the EU. That said, the rise of electric buses is certainly noteworthy. Sales jumped by a significant 23.8% compared to the previous year, signaling a growing commitment to greener public transportation solutions. It’s a small step, but definitely a step in the right direction, and I expect to see that figure continue to rise in the coming years.
