AFCON Final Fallout: 4 Players Banned! What Happens Next?!
Sports 29 January 2026

The fallout from the fiercely contested Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) final continues, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) handing down some pretty significant penalties to both Senegal and Morocco. It's a clear message that unruly behavior, whether on the pitch or in the stands, simply won't be tolerated. And honestly, after witnessing some of the antics during that match, I can't say I'm entirely surprised.

AFCON Final Fallout: 4 Players Banned! What Happen...

Senegal, the reigning champions heading into the tournament, are bearing the brunt of the disciplinary action. The Senegalese Football Federation has been slapped with a hefty $615,000 fine for a laundry list of violations, including what CAF deemed inappropriate behavior from their fans, a concerning number of yellow cards racked up by their players (five, to be exact), and general team misconduct. That's a serious financial hit, and it definitely sends a strong message to the team and its supporters.

Morocco isn't escaping unscathed either. They're facing a $315,000 penalty. CAF cited the behavior of ball boys, the distracting use of lasers by some fans (a perennial problem at football matches, I might add), attempts by Moroccan players to interfere with the referee's VAR review, and even misconduct from their technical staff. It paints a picture of a final that was, shall we say, less than sportsmanlike.

But the individual sanctions are perhaps even more impactful. Senegal's national team coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, is staring down a five-match ban from all official CAF competitions and a $100,000 fine. That's a harsh punishment, stemming from what CAF termed "unsportsmanlike conduct" in protesting a penalty awarded to Morocco, which apparently led to the team briefly leaving the field. You simply can't pull stunts like that on this stage, and CAF is clearly making an example.

Adding insult to injury, Senegalese players Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr each received two-match bans for their conduct towards the referee. On the Moroccan side, Ismael Saibari is suspended for three official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for "unsportsmanlike conduct," while star player Achraf Hakimi received a two-match ban, with one match suspended for a year. Hakimi's ban is significant, though the suspended match offers a slight reprieve. It just goes to show that even top-tier talent isn't immune to disciplinary action when boundaries are crossed.

These penalties serve as a stark reminder that passion and competitiveness need to be tempered with respect for the rules and for the game itself. Hopefully, this will lead to a more disciplined and sportsmanlike atmosphere in future AFCON tournaments. Nobody wants to see a great sporting event tarnished by avoidable controversies.
