Venezuela Airspace REOPENS?! What Trump Said Will SHOCK You!
Current Affairs 29 January 2026

Well folks, hold onto your hats. It seems Venezuela might be opening up, at least according to former President Trump. In a rather surprising announcement on Thursday, Trump declared he's directed the Transportation Secretary and military officials to get Venezuelan airspace reopened, essentially paving the way for American tourists (and business people, presumably) to start heading south. He even claimed to have personally informed acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez of the decision. Color me skeptical until I see it happen.

Venezuela Airspace REOPENS?! What Trump Said Will ...

Now, here's the kicker: as of writing this, the Venezuelan government hasn't confirmed this news. Silence is golden, sure, but in this case, it feels a bit like a giant question mark hanging over the whole thing. We're waiting for a response, and you know we'll be covering it when it comes.

Adding to the intrigue, the State Department seems to be inching toward re-establishing a diplomatic presence in Caracas. The AP got hold of a notice outlining a "phased approach," deploying temporary staff to get the ball rolling again. That's a pretty significant shift, considering the deep freeze that settled over U.S.-Venezuela relations back in 2019. Remember all that? It feels like ages ago.

Let's not forget, the State Department still has its highest travel advisory in place for Venezuela, warning of wrongful detention, torture, and kidnapping. So, while Trump is painting this picture of a safe and welcoming Venezuela, the official government line is still "stay away." It's a bit of a disconnect, to say the least. Last November, Trump even declared the airspace closed due to "heightened military activity", so this reversal is pretty sudden.

Interestingly, American Airlines is jumping on board, or at least signaling they're ready to. They announced plans to reinstate nonstop service from the U.S. after suspending flights back in 2019. Their chief commercial officer, Nat Pieper, gushed about renewing the "incredible relationship" and reuniting families. You know, that's all well and good, but I still can't help but wonder what kind of security guarantees they've received, given the ongoing concerns. It sounds like a classic business opportunity trumping (no pun intended) other important considerations.

So, where does all this leave us? Well, it's a mixed bag, isn't it? A potential reopening, conflicting signals from different parts of the U.S. government, and an airline eager to get back in the game. It's a developing story, and one that's worth keeping a close eye on. I know I will.
