South Korea is officially on the ground in Italy, ready to chase Olympic glory at the 2026 Winter Games. The main delegation touched down in Milan on Friday evening, kicking off what promises to be a thrilling couple of weeks for Korean sports fans.

Winter Olympics Dream on Ice? Korea's Team Faces C...

The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) confirmed that the bulk of their team – 38 athletes and officials – landed in Milan, which will be the epicenter for all the skating events. A smaller group of seven, destined for the snowy peaks of Cortina d'Ampezzo, departed South Korea just hours earlier. Cortina, of course, will be hosting the snow and sliding sports, so they'll be right in the thick of the action.

Apparently, the Milan arrival was a warm one. The KSOC reports that Choi Tae-ho, South Korea’s consul general in Milan, was there to greet the team, along with representatives from the local Korean community. It's always nice to see that kind of support, especially when athletes are so far from home. Speed skater Park Ji-woo and short track star Lee June-seo had the honor of carrying the Taegeukgi, the South Korean national flag, making for a pretty impressive visual.

Speaking of Park Ji-woo, she's set to be one of the flag bearers at the opening ceremony this Friday, sharing the spotlight with figure skating sensation Cha Jun-hwan. Lee June-seo, a force to be reckoned with in short track, is captaining the men's team, adding another layer of responsibility to his already considerable talent.

So, what are South Korea's medal hopes? Well, a total of 71 athletes will be competing in six different sports across northern Italy, and the KSOC has set an ambitious goal: at least three gold medals. They're aiming to surpass their performance at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and crack the top 10 in the overall medal standings. Lofty goals, for sure, but definitely achievable given the talent they're bringing to the table. I personally think they have a good chance, especially in short track and speed skating.

While the official opening ceremony is Friday, the competition actually kicks off a bit earlier for South Korea. Their first event is Wednesday, with the mixed doubles curling team hitting the ice for their first round-robin match. Curling might not be the most glamorous sport, but it's always exciting to watch, and it can definitely deliver some unexpected upsets.

This year's Winter Olympics are unique in their geographical spread. The Milan-Cortina Games will be the most dispersed in Olympic history, with venues scattered across a whopping 22,000 square kilometers. Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo are the main hubs, but other locations like the Valtellina Cluster and Val di Fiemme Cluster will also play a key role, hosting events like alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, and cross-country skiing. It's going to be quite the logistical feat, but I think it'll make for a truly memorable Games.
