Why Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, More Can't Play In 2026 World Baseball Classic

Astros Fans Devastated! Altuve, Correa OUT of 2026...

The 2026 World Baseball Classic is shaping up to be a thrilling event, with fans already dreaming of seeing baseball's biggest names face off on the international stage. But some familiar faces will be noticeably absent. Insurance issues are sidelining several prominent players, including Houston Astros' Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, along with New York Mets' Francisco Lindor. And it's causing some serious friction.

Altuve (Venezuela), Correa and Lindor (both Puerto Rico) are unfortunately among those deemed ineligible for the tournament because they can't secure the necessary insurance coverage. This isn't just a bureaucratic hurdle; it's a critical safeguard designed to protect MLB teams financially if a player gets injured while competing in the WBC. It's a tough situation, balancing national pride with the realities of multi-million dollar contracts.

"Due to the criteria for WBC insurance coverage, Jose Altuve was looking forward to participating in the WBC and representing Venezuela, but unfortunately is not eligible to do so," the MLBPA stated, highlighting the disappointment felt by players. "Jose is obviously disappointed in this result, but he is looking forward to getting to spring training and preparing himself for a successful season." It's a bittersweet statement, I'm sure; representing your country is a huge honor for these guys.

A contributing factor, no doubt, is recent injury history. Altuve, remember, suffered a thumb injury during the 2023 WBC that kept him out at the start of the MLB season. Plus, he had foot surgery in November. Correa has his own history of ailments, including back, rib, finger, and foot issues. And Lindor? He underwent elbow surgery just this past October. These are all risk factors that insurance companies carefully consider.

"Due to the cleanup procedure that Francisco Lindor had on his right elbow earlier this offseason, he will not be participating for team Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic," the MLBPA confirmed. "Francisco is obviously disappointed that he will be unable to participate. However, because of WBC insurance constraints, he is ineligible to play in WBC games. He will participate fully in all spring training activities." So while they can train, the official games are out.

It gets worse for Puerto Rico: Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios and Cincinnati Reds reliever Emilio Pagan have also been denied clearance to participate. It's such a significant blow that Dr. Jose Quiles, President of the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation, is even suggesting the country might withdraw from the 2026 World Baseball Classic altogether! "We are considering not participating in this edition [of the WBC]. It’s a discussion we’ve already had," Quiles said. "If we are not playing under equal conditions, we will not participate. It’s a decision that is almost, almost, made. We are issuing a warning. We’ll see what happens in the coming days, and we will make a final decision."

This insurance issue gained major prominence after Mets closer Edwin Diaz, fresh off a massive contract, suffered a devastating torn patellar tendon during a celebratory pile-on following a Puerto Rico victory in the 2023 WBC. He missed the entire 2023 MLB season. That incident really put a spotlight on the potential financial risks involved, and it's clearly having a ripple effect on player availability and even entire team participation in the upcoming tournament. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out in the coming months.
