President Trump has reportedly directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to stand down in Democrat-run cities experiencing protests, essentially telling them, "You're on your own." Unless, that is, they specifically request federal assistance or federal property is under threat. It's a bold move, and one that’s sure to stir controversy, especially given the backdrop of escalating tensions across the country.
Trump's Shocking Order: Will Dem Cities Be Left to...
This directive comes hot on the heels of a "National Shutdown" on Friday, organized in response to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. Organizers called for a complete halt to work, school, and shopping in an effort to pressure the government to curb immigration raids. And while some protests remained peaceful, others took a turn for the worse.
In Los Angeles, for instance, demonstrations spiraled into clashes with law enforcement, including federal agents, as protesters managed to seize an ICE facility. We saw similar events unfolding in Eugene, Oregon, where protesters actually breached a federal building and then refused to leave. These incidents undoubtedly raised the stakes, prompting the President’s response.
Taking to Truth Social on Saturday, Trump made his position crystal clear. He stated that he had instructed Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem that the federal government would essentially stay out of managing protests or riots in "poorly run Democrat Cities" – unless they specifically asked for assistance. It's a political jab, no doubt, but also a statement about Federalism and the responsibilities of state and local governments.
"We will, however, guard, and very powerfully so, any and all Federal Buildings that are being attacked… I have instructed ICE and/or Border Patrol to be very forceful in this protection of Federal Government Property," Trump added, emphasizing that while he’s willing to let states handle their own affairs, he won’t stand by while federal property is damaged or seized. And you know, having seen some of the images from these protests, it's easy to understand the concern.
The surge in protests is also fueled by outrage over the recent fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents during enforcement operations in Minneapolis. These incidents have become rallying cries for activists, further exacerbating the already tense situation. It's a powder keg, to say the least.
Earlier in the week, House Democrats even called for Secretary Noem's removal, arguing that the violence "must end forthwith." Trump, however, has defended Noem, stating that she is being targeted because she "has done a really GREAT JOB." So, the stage is set for a major showdown, both on the streets and in the halls of power. The question now is, how will this all play out?
