Jefferson's SHOCK Claim: Vikings Would Be BETTER With Darnold?!
Sports 02 February 2026

Vikings fans, brace yourselves. Star receiver Justin Jefferson has dropped a bombshell, openly wondering if the team might be preparing for a Super Bowl run of their own had they held onto quarterback Sam Darnold. In a recent interview, Jefferson didn't mince words, suggesting Minnesota *could* have been contenders had Darnold stayed put instead of heading to the Seattle Seahawks.

Jefferson's SHOCK Claim: Vikings Would Be BETTER W...

Darnold, of course, is now leading the Seahawks, somewhat unexpectedly, to the Super Bowl. I mean, who saw *that* coming? It's hard not to play the "what if" game in situations like these, and Jefferson is clearly feeling the sting. He admitted to *USA Today* that he firmly believes the Vikings would have surpassed their already respectable 9-8 record in 2025 with Darnold calling the shots.

The Vikings' decision to roll with rookie J.J. McCarthy, their high-profile 10th overall pick, clearly hasn't panned out as hoped. McCarthy struggled through the 2025 season, battling injuries and inconsistency. His stat line – 57.6% completion rate, 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and a concerning 12 interceptions in 10 games – speaks for itself. He definitely showed flashes, but overall, it wasn't the breakout year the Vikings were banking on.

Meanwhile, Darnold has been on a tear in Seattle. He threw for a whopping 4,048 yards, tossing 25 touchdowns against 14 interceptions, and led the Seahawks to an impressive 14-3 regular-season record. His postseason performance has been equally stellar, highlighted by a 346-yard, three-touchdown masterpiece in Seattle's NFC Championship victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Talk about a glow-up!

It's a stark contrast to Darnold's final games in Minnesota, where the offense sputtered to a halt, culminating in a disappointing Wild Card round exit. Jefferson clearly believes the Vikings missed a golden opportunity. Interestingly, Darnold actually had better stats in his final year with the Vikings. He threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, achieving a 102.5 passer rating and leading the team to 14 wins! It's easy to see why the Seahawks offered him a lucrative three-year, $100.5 million contract.

Jefferson's own production suffered noticeably without Darnold. After a brilliant 2024 season, where he racked up 103 receptions for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns with Darnold, his numbers plummeted to 84 catches for 1,048 yards and a mere two touchdowns in 2025. You can’t help but feel the impact of the QB change there.

Jefferson, ever the professional, expressed support for Darnold. "It’s definitely tough. It’s tough to watch," Jefferson admitted. "I love that he’s in the Super Bowl. I’m happy for him…Of course, selfishly, I wish he had done that for us last year... I’m rooting for Seattle, and I think Seattle’s gonna win." It’s a bittersweet sentiment, no doubt, but it also adds another layer to the ongoing quarterback debate in Minnesota. Could things have been different? Jefferson certainly seems to think so.
