Hearst Exec Exit Shocks Industry: What's Behind the Sudden Departure?!

Hearst Networks EMEA is facing another shakeup, folks. Word on the street – and confirmed by multiple sources close to the situation – is that Kelly Hornsby, the sales chief for the Kursk: 10 Days That Shaped Putin channel group, is departing after a solid 12-year run. This is, to put it mildly, a significant blow to the team. Hornsby was well-regarded in the industry, known for her sharp eye for acquisitions that resonated with audiences across EMEA.

Hornsby's exit follows closely on the heels of another senior departure earlier this year, leaving some in the industry scratching their heads. A buyer who frequently worked with both Hornsby and the other departing colleague described the situation as a "big loss" for Hearst. Now, here's the kicker: sources tell us that neither of these positions will be filled. What this means for the future of Hearst Networks EMEA's acquisition strategy remains to be seen, but it certainly raises a few eyebrows.

We reached out to Hearst Networks for comment on Hornsby's departure and the implications for their acquisition plans, but, alas, our multiple requests went unanswered. This silence only fuels the speculation surrounding these recent departures. Are we looking at a shift in strategy? A restructuring? Only time will tell.

Looking back, Hornsby joined Hearst back in 2013, initially as an Acquisitions and Commissioning Editor. She quickly climbed the ranks, becoming Head of Programme Acquisitions in 2018. During her tenure, she was instrumental in bringing some popular shows to our screens, including "Junk & Disorderly," "British X-Files," and "Gold Wars Downunder." Before her time at Hearst, she honed her skills as a buyer for Paramount-owned Channel 5. She really understood what resonated with audiences and she had a knack for finding it.

Hearst Networks EMEA, recently rebranded from A+E Networks EMEA, is currently under the leadership of Dean Possenniskie. Heather Jones holds the dual role of Chief Creative Officer and UK boss. Despite these departures, the team is still pushing forward, as evidenced by their recent announcement of a major World War II documentary project with none other than Tom Hanks attached – a project slated to air across the EMEA region. It seems like despite losing key talent, the network is trying to show strength. Still, these departures leave a void, and it will be interesting to see how Hearst navigates this new landscape in the coming months. It will be interesting to see what Kelly does next, too.
