Broadway legend Patti LuPone capped off her Carnegie Hall performance last night with a moment that electrified the audience – a fiery call to arms, urging the protection of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. from the clutches of President Donald Trump. It was quite a finish to an otherwise politically restrained evening, and the crowd, as you can imagine, went wild.
LuPone's Fiery Trump Warning: Will Kennedy Center ...
For nearly two hours, LuPone, a powerhouse performer known for her roles in "Evita" and "Gypsy," held back from any impromptu political commentary. Then, as the curtain neared its close, there she was, standing tall in a striking blue gown, directly addressing the audience with a passion that only Patti LuPone can deliver. And the message was clear: the Kennedy Center is under threat.
The crux of the issue? President Trump, having assumed control of the Kennedy Center last year, has ruffled quite a few feathers. He installed his own appointees to the board, a move that raised eyebrows, and then there's the name. It now reads "The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts." I mean, seriously? But perhaps the most alarming development is the recently announced two-year closure for renovations.
Now, critics of the administration aren't buying the renovation story. They suggest that the real reason behind the closure is the Center's dwindling artistic programming and, frankly, the notable number of artist cancellations that have plagued it lately. It's a situation ripe for speculation, and speculation there has been.
Rumors had been swirling about a potential demolition, whispers that Trump might follow a similar path to what some allege happened with the White House East Wing. Can you imagine the uproar? However, the President himself addressed these concerns on Monday, somewhat unconvincingly, I might add.
"I'm not ripping it down," Trump told reporters. "I'll be using the steel. So we're using the structure, we're using some of the marble, and some of the marble comes down." It all sounds a bit… vague, doesn’t it? His reassurances haven't exactly calmed the nerves of Kennedy Center supporters, especially those who see this closure as a deliberate attempt to undermine a vital cultural institution. And really, when you consider the history and importance of the Kennedy Center, who can blame them?
