UAE Travellers REJOICE! Duty-Free Gold & Electronics Now Easier?
Current Affairs 04 February 2026

India's just made it a bit easier for folks returning home from the UAE, especially those laden with gifts and electronics. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has upped the Duty-free allowance, giving travelers some much-needed breathing room. Anyone who's ever lugged a suitcase full of goodies back home knows exactly how welcome this news is.

So, what's changed? Well, previously, Indian residents or foreigners living in India could bring in goods worth up to ₹50,000 without paying duty, provided they'd been chilling abroad for more than three days. That limit, however, applied mainly to personal stuff and souvenirs – not exactly big-ticket items meant for resale. Now, the limit has been bumped up to ₹75,000 for residents and Indian-origin travelers, including those who call the UAE home. That includes *one* laptop, which is a pretty significant addition, if you ask me.

Interestingly, there are different rules for different types of travelers. Foreign tourists get a ₹25,000 allowance for personal items. Foreign nationals with work visas or other non-tourist permits get the full ₹75,000. And, bless their hearts, airline crew members are stuck with a paltry ₹2,500 limit. Guess they’ll have to stick to miniature bottles of liquor. It’s also worth noting that everything needs to be carried either on your person or in your checked baggage to qualify. No sending stuff ahead via cargo and expecting it to be duty-free.

For UAE-based Indians, this is a sweet deal. Many travel back regularly for family visits, festivals, and weddings. This increased allowance means they can now bring back more of those tempting duty-free goodies – gadgets, clothes, accessories, you name it – without having to worry about hefty customs bills. Think about it: that fancy new phone you've been eyeing, that perfect silk saree for your mom… it all just got a little more affordable. And the best part? No more sweating it out at customs, trying to justify every single purchase. I’ve been there, done that, and believe me, it's not fun.

Of course, it's always wise to declare anything exceeding the allowance. The CBIC is pretty clear on that. Honesty is the best policy, after all. Trying to sneak something through could land you in hot water, and nobody wants to start their vacation or homecoming with a customs penalty. So, do your homework, know your limits, and pack smart. Happy travels, and happy shopping!
