Spring Thaw Danger! Melting Snow Poses Hidden Risks – Are YOU Prepared?!
Current Affairs 04 February 2026

Okay, so it's February 4th, and technically, according to the old calendar, it's Risshun – the beginning of spring. I always find that a bit of a joke, given we're usually still knee-deep in winter here. But hey, the calendar doesn't lie, right?

Spring Thaw Danger! Melting Snow Poses Hidden Risk...

What's actually happening, though, is a bit… confusing. The Japan Meteorological Agency is saying we've got Warm air pushing in from the south. And while that *sounds* nice, it's creating some interesting (and potentially dangerous) situations. We're talking March-like temperatures in places like Kanazawa, where they hit 10.4°C. Joetsu's at 9.2°C, and even Aomori City, which is usually bracing for the worst of winter, is sitting at a relatively balmy 6.2°C.

Now, the problem with these unseasonably Warm temperatures is what it’s doing to the snow. I remember a few years back, we had a similar situation, and the snow suddenly started melting *fast*. The real kicker? Rain in Tohoku, instead of snow. That’s unusual, to say the least.

The big concern here is roof avalanches. All that snow that's been building up? It's getting heavier and looser, and it's primed to slide off in big chunks. So, the official advice is – and it's good advice – stay away from walking under snow-laden roofs. Seriously. It's not worth the risk. I've seen the damage those snowfalls can do; they're no joke.

And if you *have* to remove snow from your roof (because, let's face it, someone's got to do it), please, for goodness sake, don't do it alone. Work in pairs, or even better, in groups. It's safer that way. Having someone there to spot you, or to call for help if something goes wrong, is absolutely crucial. I've even heard of people using ropes and harnesses, which might seem extreme, but honestly, it might be worth considering depending on your situation. We all want to enjoy this (very) early taste of spring, but let's do it safely. So be careful out there, folks.
