Let's face it: some of the best gaming experiences aren't about winning, epic stories, or even particularly good graphics. Sometimes, you just want to laugh until your sides hurt with your friends. That's where the funniest co-op games come in. These games thrive on a mix of chaotic countdowns, spectacularly awkward miscommunications, slapstick physics, and just plain weirdness. Whether you're yelling across the living room during a heated couch co-op session or dissolving into fits of giggles over voice chat as your carefully laid plans crumble into dust, these games are designed to elicit laughter while still delivering a solid gameplay experience.
Laugh Riot! The Co-Op Games That Prove Friendship ...
There's no one-size-fits-all formula for a hilarious co-op game, of course. Some games nail it with clever writing and well-timed jokes, others let wild physics take the center stage, and still others are essentially party games designed to equally embarrass everyone involved. The options are surprisingly plentiful. If you're looking specifically for couch-based shenanigans, our best couch co-op games list will have you covered. Or maybe you're looking for something just for two? We've also got suggestions for two-player co-op experiences.
One standout title that's tickled my funny bone recently is *R.E.P.O.*, released just this year.
R.E.P.O
Release date: February 26, 2024
Developer: Semiwork
Platforms: PC
Who says horror can't be funny? *R.E.P.O* is a brilliant co-op comedy-horror game that somehow manages to be both terrifying and hilarious. You and your friends play as blobby employees whose job is to retrieve valuable items from haunted locations, armed with physics-based tools that are *deliberately* unwieldy. It's also a popular and highly-rated Steam Deck game, meaning you can take the chaos on the road (or, you know, to your friend's house for an impromptu gaming session). I've played it on my Steam Deck on the train to visit my sister, and it's great!
The humor in *R.E.P.O.* isn't from canned jokes, but from the sheer slapstick horror of watching a friend get vaporized by some unknown, terrifying entity or fumbling a priceless artifact at the last second. Characters stumble, objects go flying, and carefully laid plans instantly disintegrate under the slightest pressure. It's especially funny with friends who can't quite keep their cool, especially with proximity voice chat ratcheting up the tension. Now, for a classic, you can't go wrong with *Portal 2*. I know, it's old, but it's gold.
Portal 2
Release date: April 19, 2011
Developer: Valve
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Despite its age, *Portal 2's* co-op mode remains a masterclass in hilarious two-player chaos. Two players control a pair of ungainly test robots tasked with solving increasingly complex portal puzzles, all while enduring increasingly elaborate insults from GLaDOS. The writing is sharp, dry, relentlessly quotable, and the gameplay remains timeless. Seriously, the lines from GLaDOS are comedic masterpieces.
Despite the humor, *Portal 2* never loses sight of its core identity as a fantastic puzzle game. This balance is key to its enduring appeal – you're deeply engaged in problem-solving one moment and laughing uncontrollably the next. It's clever without being pretentious and silly without being shallow, constantly challenging you and demanding your attention.

And lastly, for something just plain ridiculous, there's *Heave Ho*.
Heave Ho
Release date: August 29, 2019
Developer: Le Cartel Studio
Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch
*Heave Ho* is pure, unadulterated silliness. It combines physical comedy with a co-op platformer, where long-armed characters grapple with any reachable surface.
