Nissan Xterra SHOCK Return?! What Will It Mean For Off-Road SUVs?!
Automotive 05 February 2026

Rumors have been swirling for years, but it looks like the Nissan Xterra is finally making a comeback! According to whispers (and a few bolder statements) coming out of the recent National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) meeting in Las Vegas, Nissan is prepping to re-introduce the iconic off-roader in the latter half of 2028. Now, that's a ways off, but the fact that dealers are already getting a sneak peek suggests Nissan is serious about this, and giving themselves plenty of runway to prepare.

Nissan Xterra SHOCK Return?! What Will It Mean For...

Apparently, Nissan gave dealers a closed-door viewing of the new Xterra at NADA, and the reaction seems to be overwhelmingly positive. Automotive News quoted Scott Smith, president of Smith Automotive Group near Atlanta, saying the SUV will be "worth the wait." That's a pretty strong endorsement, especially considering dealers are generally a pretty tough crowd to impress.

So, what can we expect? Well, the new Xterra is being described as having a "radical" design, which is always exciting to hear. It will reportedly draw inspiration from the original Xterra, but with a modern twist fit for the late 2020s. We're talking a tough, off-road-oriented aesthetic, a prominent grille, and an overall emphasis on durability. Think rugged, not refined. This is being built on an all-new body-on-frame platform, according to Charlie Hicks, CEO of Hicks Automotive Group in Texas, and will boast an "aggressive stance." Translation: expect something that looks ready to tackle some serious trails.

Interestingly, this new platform isn't just for the Xterra. It's supposedly going to underpin the next-generation Pathfinder, Frontier, and even the luxury QX60. That's a significant investment, which further reinforces the idea that Nissan is really committed to this new generation of trucks and SUVs. And, adding another layer of intrigue, all of these models are expected to offer "electrified" powertrains. This likely means hybrid and/or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options will be available, blending off-road capability with some degree of fuel efficiency – something the original Xterra certainly wasn't known for! Don't forget the next-gen Rogue is also expected to arrive in 2027.

While the focus was definitely on SUVs and pickups, the future of Nissan's sedans was also discussed, albeit briefly. The Altima, now seven years old, will stick around for a little while longer, but it's apparently headed for retirement by the end of summer 2027. No replacement was mentioned. With the Versa already gone, that leaves the Sentra as the sole survivor in Nissan's sedan lineup. In a market increasingly dominated by SUVs, it seems Nissan is prioritizing what sells. As a long time driver of sedans myself, it is a bit sad to see so many go.
