This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the Korean and Indonesian governments. In April, the Korean Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Indonesian government, outlining a shared commitment to transforming Bali's transportation infrastructure. The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) spearheaded the bidding process for the electric bus supply project in August, ultimately selecting Hyundai Motor.
The deployment of electric buses in Bali aligns with a global trend towards sustainable transportation solutions, particularly in tourist destinations seeking to minimize their environmental impact. By embracing electric vehicles, Bali aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment for its inhabitants and the millions of tourists who visit each year.
Kim Sung-nam, head of Hyundai Motor's Asia-Pacific regional headquarters, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "It is meaningful that we will provide electric buses to Bali, a destination visited by many tourists from around the world." He further emphasized Hyundai's commitment to supporting Indonesia's broader efforts to build environmentally friendly transportation systems in major cities across the archipelago.
The introduction of Hyundai's County Electric minibuses to Bali's public transportation network represents a significant investment in the island's future, showcasing its dedication to sustainable development and positioning it as a leader in eco-friendly tourism. This project is expected to pave the way for further collaborations between Hyundai and Indonesia, fostering the growth of green transportation solutions throughout the nation.
