Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy - It's been a whirlwind day for Team GB at the Winter Olympics, with curling taking center stage, thanks in no small part to an unexpected spectator. Yes, you read that right: Snoop Dogg himself was in the house at the Cortina Curling Stadium, and apparently, he's a fan! More on that in a bit.
Snoop Dogg Cheers On GB Curlers?! You Won't Believ...
But first, let's talk about the ice. Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat have been absolutely unstoppable in the mixed doubles curling, adding two more wins to their tally today. They started by defeating a strong Swedish team, who, let's not forget, pipped them to the bronze medal back in 2022. The final score was 7-4, a solid victory against a tough opponent. They then followed that up with a dominant 8-2 win over South Korea. Honestly, it wasn't even close.
This puts the Scottish duo firmly at the top of the standings, and they're now tantalizingly close to securing a spot in the semi-finals. Experts say six wins out of nine round-robin games should be enough to get them there, which means just one more victory will seal the deal. Talking to BBC Sport, 2022 Olympic silver medallist Vicky Wright was full of praise. "Jen and Bruce were fantastic again," she said. "They just kept putting the pressure on, giving Korea no chance to recover." Mouat, who had been a bit self-critical in the early stages, really seemed to find his groove today, and when combined with Dodd's consistent brilliance, they’re a force to be reckoned with.
Oh, and back to Snoop Dogg! After their win against Sweden, the rap icon apparently requested a selfie with Dodds and Mouat. You can't make this stuff up. Imagine showing that photo to your grandkids! What a surreal moment. I wonder if he’s got a favorite curling stone...
Meanwhile, over in the Italian Alps, snowboarder Txema Mazet-Brown made his Olympic debut in the Big Air competition at Livigno Snow Park. The 19-year-old, who is the current junior world champion in Big Air, finished 21st in qualifying with a score of 151.75. Unfortunately, only the top 12 advanced to the final, but he still showed off some great skills in challenging conditions. He'll be back in action on February 16th for the slopestyle qualifying, which he seems to be feeling a bit more confident about. "I'm happy with the riding, it could have been a bit better with the cleanliness of one [run], but not bad overall," Mazet-Brown told BBC Sport. "Standing up there, you realize that this is one of the biggest events in the world. I'm proud, for sure."
So, a mixed bag of results for Team GB today, but with curling dominating the headlines – and Snoop Dogg adding a touch of celebrity sparkle – it's been a day to remember.
