Chilla's Art, the indie studio known for their unsettling and atmospheric Horror titles, has just dropped something a little different. Forget haunted schools and creepy convenience stores for a minute. Their latest offering, "UMIGARI," takes us out to sea. Specifically, the fog-drenched, often treacherous seas surrounding Japan. And instead of jump scares lurking around every corner, you're facing…fish? Well, and the inherent dangers of being alone on the water, I suppose.
UMIGARI: Lost at Sea? Official Trailer Reveals Sho...
This isn't your grandpa's fishing game. We're talking harpoon fishing, folks. Straight up, man versus beast (or, you know, fish) with nothing but a pointy stick and your wits. The official launch trailer hit today, and it gives a great taste of the eerie atmosphere Chilla's Art is so good at creating. Even a seemingly peaceful activity like fishing gets a unsettling vibe when cloaked in thick fog and accompanied by a haunting soundtrack. I always appreciate how they do that, I've always been a fan.
The gameplay loop seems pretty straightforward: Hunt, sell, manage, upgrade. You're out there harpooning everything from your standard sea bass to, judging by the trailer, some seriously impressive (and potentially dangerous) sea creatures. You then haul your catch back to port to sell, earning cash to buy essential fuel for your boat and, more importantly, upgrade your harpoon and other gear. Because let's be honest, a bigger harpoon is always better, right?
Resource management is key, apparently. Running out of fuel in the middle of a dense fog bank doesn't exactly sound like a recipe for a relaxing afternoon. It adds a layer of strategic depth that elevates "UMIGARI" beyond a simple arcade-style fishing simulator. You've got to be smart about your hunts and how you spend your hard-earned cash. It sounds like it really fits the lonely world of the game.
What’s really intriguing is the potential for subtle Horror elements that could be woven into the gameplay. Will there be more than just fish lurking beneath the waves? Knowing Chilla's Art, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some unsettling secrets hidden in the depths, waiting to be discovered (or perhaps, to discover you). I think this will be a really cool experience for those who appreciate a slower burn of horror. I'm definitely adding it to my wishlist.
"UMIGARI" is available now on PC via Steam. So, if you're looking for a unique fishing experience with a healthy dose of unsettling atmosphere, definitely check out the launch trailer. It just might hook you. (Sorry, I had to.)
