Preorders are through the roof for the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes expansion in Magic: The Gathering, and honestly, it's got me a little concerned. Is it time for Wizards of the Coast to pump the brakes a bit? I'm starting to worry that these Universes Beyond crossovers are once again poised to completely overshadow the core, in-universe sets that built Magic into the behemoth it is today.
Marvel SHOCKS Magic! Crossover Set to Rewrite EVER...
Magic isn't slowing down, that's for sure. They're planning a staggering *four* Universes Beyond crossover sets for 2026: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel Super Heroes (again!), The Hobbit, and even Star Trek. And the early reveal of cards and products for these sets? It's already started to steal the thunder from the current Edge of Eternities set. It's like they can't help themselves.
Let's be honest, that first Spider-Man set was, arguably, Magic’s most disappointing release in recent memory. Edge of Eternities, while an improvement, never really had a chance to shine. I was hoping Wizards would learn from this, but looking at their 2026 roadmap, which includes *seven* full sets... well, it's a little overwhelming.
Lorwyn Eclipsed, the current set, a return to a beloved plane no less, *just* launched. Seriously, it feels like it was yesterday. Yet, preorders are *already* open for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Secrets of Strixhaven, and yes, Marvel Super Heroes. Lorwyn Eclipsed, a triumphant return to a plane many fans adore, should be a celebration. Instead, those pizza-loving Turtles are already looming large on the horizon. It's a bit much, isn't it?
Looking past even Strixhaven to *another* Marvel crossover, especially with the slightly bitter taste of the Spider-Man set still lingering, just creates a… well, a slightly negative feeling. Wizards, please, I'm begging you, don’t let Secrets of Strixhaven suffer the same fate as Edge of Eternities. Give it a chance! Let these sets breathe.
With such a packed release schedule, it feels almost unavoidable that some sets will get less love than others. But if Wizards can't dedicate sufficient attention to its own universes, the ones that have captivated players for over three decades, isn't it time to rethink this strategy? Are they spreading themselves too thin? I think so.
Ultimately, this may all be a moot point. I'm admitting here and now that I've already pre-ordered some Marvel Superheroes products. And you can bet I'll be first in line for The Hobbit. I'm a sucker for nostalgia and cool IPs, I guess. Sigh. Judge me if you must.
