Tenerife Miracle: 76-Year-Old's 30-Hour Cliff Survival Stuns Rescuers!

The Canary Islands, beautiful as they are, can be deceptively dangerous. A 76-year-old British pensioner is incredibly lucky to be alive after a 30-hour ordeal in a ravine on Tenerife. Susan Hornsby, enjoying a holiday with her husband, Peter, decided to take a solo hike, a decision that quickly turned into a desperate fight for survival.

Tenerife Miracle: 76-Year-Old's 30-Hour Cliff Surv...

Hornsby set off around 10 a.m. on Friday, embarking on what was supposed to be a relatively easy three-hour hike. However, the terrain proved more challenging than anticipated, and, according to her family, she became unwell. When she didn't return, and couldn't be reached, the alarm bells started ringing.

Louise Bakewell, Hornsby's sister-in-law, sprang into action, launching an urgent appeal on Facebook. Social media can be a powerful tool in these situations, and the post, noting Susan's distinctive red coat and white hat, quickly spread. The agonizing wait continued.

Then, finally, around 2 p.m. on Saturday, came the news everyone was praying for. "I managed to find her IMEI number, and she’s just been found alive after 28 hours," Bakewell posted, a palpable sense of relief evident in her words. "She was found in a ravine and has been airlifted to hospital."

Local authorities confirmed that Hornsby was suffering from dehydration and had genuinely feared for her life during her time stranded. The rescue team swiftly airlifted her to a hospital for urgent medical attention. The fact that she was found alive is nothing short of a miracle, and a testament to the quick thinking of her family and the responsiveness of the rescue services.

Bakewell later clarified that the "Find My iPhone" feature on Hornsby's phone was enabled, and it was the IMEI number that ultimately helped rescuers pinpoint her location. "Please tell your friends and relatives to always enable this if they can, just to be safe," she urged. It’s a simple, yet potentially life-saving measure that many overlook.

This incident, tragically, isn't an isolated one. Back in September, Clifford Wildgoose, another 76-year-old, went missing for nearly 48 hours on Spain’s Costa del Sol before being found and rescued. It highlights the particular vulnerability of older travelers, especially those venturing out alone. I remember a similar case a few years back in the Lake District - these stories always hit home.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder for all travelers. Planning your route meticulously, informing someone of your itinerary, carrying a fully charged phone, and crucially, enabling location services are no longer optional extras - they are essential safety precautions, especially when exploring unfamiliar territory. Stay safe out there, folks.
