Down with the monarchy! Unless, of course, it's me. Because in *The Sims 4*'s surprisingly entertaining Royalty & Legacy expansion, I'm a brilliant, and definitely not corrupt, ruler.
Sims 4 Royalty?! Rule or Ruin: The Kingdom Depends...
Just like that cartoon lion who couldn't wait to be king, I find myself surprisingly eager to rule in *The Sims 4*'s latest expansion, Royalty & Legacy. Despite my general lack of enthusiasm for hereditary power structures (give me a good republic any day!), I've spent hours scheming and extorting my way to the top, intoxicated by unearned power. I'm not proud, but it's been *fun*.
In Royalty & Legacy, a Sim's path to royalty hinges on, well, being a Noble. Any Sim can become a Noble, requiring only a throne, knighthood, or, perhaps even more simply, a book and some ancestral research. For maximum dramatic potential, I resurrected Daxton Flood, a Sim of modest means (okay, he was basically a slob), for a good old-fashioned rags-to-riches narrative. The goal? Transforming this Sim-pleton into a sovereign.
The expansion tracks your Noble Alignment, which is basically a karma meter reacting to whether your actions favor the commoners (bless their cotton socks) or the elite (who frankly, need bringing down a peg). Imagine my surprise – and Daxton's – when a random Sim delivered a gift of *trash* to the palace. Pretty sure that was his opinion of our reign made clear. Letters arrive praising Daxton's beneficence (mostly manufactured, if I'm honest) or delivering veiled threats, to which you can respond from your throne – which, in our case, sat next to Daxton's overflowing bins. Talk about humble beginnings!
Daxton's quest for kingship began awkwardly, I'll admit, but we soon grasped the Nobility concept. We established a family dynasty, pursued some seriously overpowered perks, enacted a few self-serving decrees (mandatory portraits of Daxton in every home!), attended a nobles-only ball (where Daxton spilled punch on the Duchess, oops!), kissed frogs (no princes, just slime), failed miserably to extract the sword from the stone (apparently he lacks the "royal spark"), won a swordfighting tournament (pure luck, I swear!), and even engaged in an illicit rendezvous with a rival house member at sunset. Scandalous! You know, the usual royal stuff.
Secrets, it turns out, are the real currency in Royalty & Legacy. After befriending a particularly gossipy noble specifically to gain dirt on Daxton's rivals, we uncovered some *truly* intriguing information. One rival, the Countess Von Strudel (yes, really), dabbled in dark arts to manipulate her social circle! Armed with this knowledge, Daxton could orchestrate her downfall. Extortion is always an option, of course, but public exposure offers its own Machiavellian reward. After revealing Countess Von Strudel's dirty little secret on social media, I was absolutely *delighted* to see that she'd been…
