Calling all witches (and fans of feel-good stories!): Get ready to be spellbound, because "Practical Magic" is brewing up a brand new life – this time on Broadway! Yes, Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel, which already charmed us on the big screen back in 1998, is being adapted into a stage musical, and the creative team behind it is…well, enchanting is an understatement.

'Practical Magic' Musical: Broadway Spellbinding o...

Hoffman herself is taking a hand in crafting the musical's book, partnering with Peter Duchan, the writer behind the critically acclaimed musical "Dogfight." But the real magic (pun intended!) comes in the music department. None other than Grammy winner Norah Jones, along with the incredibly talented Gregg Wattenberg, will be composing the music and lyrics. Now, I don't know about you, but the thought of Jones's soulful voice lending itself to the world of "Practical Magic" gives me goosebumps. And Wattenberg, with his impressive track record of Billboard hits – think “Hey, Soul Sister” by Train – brings a proven pop sensibility to the project.

Directing this bewitching concoction will be Maria Friedman, fresh off her critically lauded revival of "Merrily We Roll Along." Friedman is known for her insightful direction and ability to draw out emotional depth from her performers, which seems like the perfect fit for a story that explores themes of family, love, and finding your own power. It’s a recipe for something truly special, and I, for one, am already clearing my schedule for opening night (whenever that might be!).

Of course, "Practical Magic" already has a pretty established legacy. The 1998 film, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the Owens sisters, became a cult classic, and the news of a film sequel, with the original stars returning, is already creating a buzz. The sequel is slated for release in September. Talk about perfect timing! I wonder how much the film sequel's hype will help with interest in the musical. It certainly couldn't hurt.

For now, details are still under wraps regarding casting and a production timeline. We do know that the musical is being produced by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, with Mark Kaufman acting as creative consultant. With such a strong creative team assembled and the backing of Warner Bros., it's safe to say that this "Practical Magic" musical has all the ingredients to become a Broadway hit. Keep your eyes peeled – and maybe start practicing your best incantations – because this is one show you won't want to miss!
