Okay, so here's a bit of a bombshell: Rumor has it Blizzard Entertainment is apparently not giving up on the dream of a *StarCraft* shooter. And this time, they’re supposedly enlisting some serious backup from Nexon, the big Korean company that owns Embark Studios, the folks behind *Arc Raiders* and the surprise hit *The Finals*.
StarCraft SHOCKER: Blizzard Teams With Nexon For F...
Now, if you're a long-time Blizzard fan, you probably remember *StarCraft: Ghost*, the stealth-action game starring Nova Terra that was announced way back when. That one, sadly, bit the dust after years in development hell. Then there was a hush-hush project, allegedly called *Ares*, that reportedly got canned in 2019. So, yeah, this would be strike three in trying to bring the Zerg and Terran to life in a completely different genre. You'd think they'd learn, but hey, maybe the third time's the charm?
It’s interesting to see Blizzard turning to external partners for this, which isn't entirely new territory for them. Remember *Diablo Immortal*? That was a collaboration with NetEase. While that partnership eventually went south (to put it mildly), *Diablo Immortal* still ended up being a fairly significant moneymaker. Perhaps Blizzard sees a similar path here, tapping into Nexon's expertise, particularly in the free-to-play space, which is where the industry seems to be heading.
Nexon, of course, isn't just Embark Studios. They've got their fingers in a *lot* of pies. From *The First Berserker: Khazan* to the surprisingly brilliant *Dave the Diver* (seriously, if you haven't played it, give it a shot!), and a bunch of massively popular online games like *Sudden Attack* and *MapleStory*, they've got a proven track record. They know how to run live-service games, and they understand the Asian market incredibly well, which is crucial. That said, it's still a gamble, right?
The big question, for me at least, is what kind of shooter will it be? Will it be a hero shooter with characters based on *StarCraft* units? A tactical shooter? Or something else entirely? Given Nexon's portfolio, my money's on something with free-to-play elements and potentially a strong emphasis on multiplayer. We can only hope that whatever it is, it captures the essence of *StarCraft* while also being a fun and engaging shooter. Because let's face it, *StarCraft* deserves a good shooter adaptation. Just... please don't mess it up, guys.
