Fenerbahçe kept the pressure on at the top of the Trendyol Süper Lig with a solid 3-1 victory over Gençlerbirliği at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium this weekend. It was a fairly straightforward win for the home side, who never really looked in danger after establishing a comfortable first-half lead. Seeing them play like this, it's easy to understand why fans believe this could finally be their year.
Fenerbahçe Triumphs! But a Shocking Twist Leaves F...
The match, part of week 21, saw Anderson Talisca open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 16th minute. That early goal seemed to settle any nerves, and from then on, Fenerbahçe controlled the tempo. But the real star of the show? Kerem Aktürkoğlu, who bagged a brace in the 27th and 33rd minutes, effectively putting the game beyond Gençlerbirliği's reach well before halftime. Sekou Koita managed a consolation goal for the visitors in the 55th minute, but it was too little, too late.
The penalty decision that led to the first goal was a bit controversial, to be honest. Asensio's pass into the box found Talisca, whose shot appeared to strike Zuzek. Initially, play continued, but after a VAR review, referee Ali Şansalan pointed to the spot, deeming it a handball. From my vantage point in the press box, it looked borderline, but these days, with VAR scrutinizing every pixel, you can't be too surprised by these decisions. Talisca coolly converted, sending the keeper the wrong way and giving Fenerbahçe that crucial early advantage.
Aktürkoğlu's first goal was a thing of beauty. Asensio, playing a deeper role in midfield, produced a sublime backheel pass that released Aktürkoğlu behind the Gençlerbirliği defense. Faced with only the goalkeeper, Aktürkoğlu showed composure beyond his years, calmly slotting the ball home. It was a goal that showcased Fenerbahçe's attacking quality and their ability to unlock stubborn defenses with moments of individual brilliance. The second, assisted by a sharp pass from Müldür, showcased his sharp instincts in the box.
While Fenerbahçe will be pleased with the three points, they'll also recognize that there's still room for improvement. Gençlerbirliği, despite the loss, showed flashes of resilience, and Koita's goal was a well-deserved reward for their efforts. For Fenerbahçe, though, the focus now shifts to their next challenge. With the title race so tight, every game is essentially a must-win. Securing this victory keeps them right in the hunt, with 49 points, breathing down the necks of the league leaders. Gençlerbirliği, with 22 points, face a different battle as they look to climb away from the lower reaches of the table. Plenty to play for on both sides still.
