Chocolate Lovers Rejoice! Lotte's Secret Cacao Plan Revealed!
Current Affairs 11 February 2026

Lotte Wellfood, it seems, isn't just resting on its sweet success. The Korean confectionery giant is doubling down on its chocolate dominance with a brand-spanking new cacao processing line. If you’re a fan of Pepero (and let's be honest, who isn't?), this is good news. More efficiently produced Pepero means…well, potentially more Pepero for everyone. Think of it as a chocolatey trickle-down effect.

Chocolate Lovers Rejoice! Lotte's Secret Cacao Pla...

The "bean-to-chocolate" pipeline, which sounds like something Willy Wonka himself would dream up, was recently launched at Lotte Wellfood’s main manufacturing plant in Yangsan. This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a full-blown upgrade that replaces the old system and significantly bumps up their chocolate production capacity. We're talking a jump from 1 ton per hour to a whopping 2.5 tons. That's a serious amount of chocolate!

But it’s not just about more chocolate, it's about smarter chocolate-making. The upgraded process has also streamlined production by a cool 25 percent. In the world of manufacturing, that’s a huge win. Efficiency gains like that often translate to cost savings, which, hopefully, trickle down to consumers – maybe we'll see fewer "shrinkflation" issues with our favorite snacks, fingers crossed!

Lotte Wellfood is apparently rather unique in the Korean market. While other companies import solid cacao mass, Lotte actually processes the beans themselves, imported primarily from Ghana, at their Yangsan plant. They've been doing this since 1995, giving them a significant edge. As a company official pointed out, this allows them to capture the unique aroma of the cacao and maximize the original flavor of the chocolate. It's a bit like freshly ground coffee versus pre-ground – there's just no comparison.

This investment certainly solidifies Lotte Wellfood's position as a major player. They already command over 37 percent of the Korean chocolate market, and this new production line is sure to further cement their lead. It shows a clear commitment to quality and innovation, which is important in a competitive market.

And the chocolate empire doesn't stop in Korea! Lotte India fired up a dedicated Pepero manufacturing plant in Haryana province last year, joining their existing facility in Chennai. They're calling it a "Choco Pie belt" – ambitious, but considering the popularity of Choco Pie and Pepero, it might just work. It's clear that Lotte is looking to expand its reach globally, and this new cacao pipeline is a key ingredient (pun intended!) in that strategy.
