Mewgenics Made Back Its 8-Year Development Cost In Just 3 Hours After Launch
Mewgenics RAKES IN Millions?! What Happened After ...
Mewgenics, the bizarre and, let's be honest, slightly disturbing cat-breeding strategy game from Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, has pulled off a truly impressive feat. After eight long years in development, the game recouped its entire development cost in a mind-boggling three hours after launch. That's faster than I can even decide what to have for lunch!
The news comes straight from the developers themselves. Tyler Glaiel, in an interview with IGN, revealed that the game's performance had "beat expectations by quite a lot." Considering the pedigree of McMillen, the mind behind the notoriously addictive *The Binding of Isaac*, that's saying something. I mean, *Isaac* has a cult following that's practically its own religion.
Edmund McMillen himself chimed in, confirming that the launch day – February 10th, mark it in your calendars, folks! – absolutely eclipsed all previous releases under his belt. Think about that for a second. "*The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth* sold 40,000 units on day one," McMillen explained. *Mewgenics*, on the other hand, moved approximately 152,000 copies in under six hours. That’s some serious catnip-powered sales.
And the momentum hasn't slowed down. As of writing this, *Mewgenics* boasts a massive 63,279 active players, with an all-time peak concurrent player count of 65,962. It's nipping at the heels of *The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth*'s peak of 70,762 players. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from a game about... well, genetically engineering cats. But the numbers don't lie.
"We knew the game was good and would do well, but *Isaac* is huge, so we thought it was unlikely to beat that," Glaiel admitted to IGN. It seems *Mewgenics* is poised to potentially surpass *The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth*, especially with the weekend crowd coming online. I'm genuinely curious to see if it can pull it off. If it does, we might just be witnessing the birth of a new indie gaming phenomenon.
*Mewgenics* is currently available on PC. If you're curious about the gameplay, Game Informer has a review-in-progress up that's worth checking out. I might just have to dive in myself and see what all the fuss is about. (Though, I'm a dog person at heart... don't tell anyone.)
